Titre : Parental Concerns of Early Development in Children with Autism and Related Disorders Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Panos VOSTANIS, Auteur ; Beryl SMITH, Auteur ; John CORBETT, Auteur ; Reena SUNGUM-PALIWAL, Auteur ; Aylif EDWARDS, Auteur ; Kate GINGELL, Auteur ; Rachel GOLDING, Auteur ; Angela MOORE, Auteur ; Jane WILLIAMS, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.229-242 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Parents of consecutively referred children with autism (39), Asperger syndrome (13), atypical autism (15), learning disability (20) and semantic-pragmatic disorder (14) completed a questionnaire on concerns regarding their child's development between 12 and 18 months. The early development questionnaire included scales of communication and language, social relationships and play behaviour. The autism and the learning disability groups differed significantly on most items. The diagnosis of autism was best predicted by play behaviour items and lack of referential gestures. Factor analysis within the autism group identified factors involving items from different scales, such as lack of physical contact, social communication and imitative skills. Children with the diagnosis of semantic-pragmatic disorders had relatively high rates of early difficulties in social development. Implications for the screening and detection of autism and related disorders in early life and for the training of professionals involved are discussed. Titre : An Evaluation of Early Development in Children with Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders from Home Movies: Preliminary Findings Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Paola BERNABEI, Auteur ; Luigia CAMAIGNI, Auteur ; Gabriel LEVI, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.243-258 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Family videos of 10 children later diagnosed as having autism or pervasive developmental disorders were analysed using a newly devised instrument. The checklist comprises 3 0 individual items and 20 functional categories. It evaluates behaviours in three areas: social interaction, communication and language, functional and symbolic play. The age range covered by home movies was divided into four periods (0-6, 6-12, 12-18 and 18-24 months) and analysed accordingly. The checklist data allow for the derivation of a general developmental profile as well as individual profiles. The most common profile was one in which children made progress from the first to the second or third age period, whereas from the second or third to the fourth period they showed a loss of previously mastered behaviours. The loss was statistically significant in socio-interactive behaviours, less evident in communication/language, and moderate in the area of action schemes and play. Mutual attention (dyadic eye contact), attachment behaviours, emotional reactions and vocalizations were present in almost all the children studied. On the other hand, communicative gestures (pointing, showing, ritualized requests), pretend play and conventional social games were rarely observed. The implications of these results for early diagnosis as well as for theories of early development in autism and severe developmental disorders are briefly discussed. We describe three individuals with this dual diagnosis and emphasize the need to consider it particularly in people with abnormalities in their social, communication and language development that are discrepant for their overall level of learning disability. HADWIN, Auteur ; Gill HUTLEY, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.269-280 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The aim of this study was to develop a questionnaire to identify specific behaviours that differentiate children with severe learning difficulties with autism from children with severe learning difficulties without autism. Using teachers' reports of current behaviour, the results showed that six behaviours significantly differentiated these two groups of children. Children in the autism group showed less joint attention (pointing for interest and showing) and less eye gaze (in general and to clarify ambiguity). In addition, they showed less functional and imaginative play and more unusual or restricted interests and stereotyped motor behaviours. Titre : Is There Really a Link Between Engineering and Autism?: A Reply to Baron-Cohen et al., Autism, 1997, 1(1),101-9 Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Christopher JARROLD, Auteur ; David A. ROUTH, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.281-289 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Baron-Cohen, Wheelwright, Scott, Bolton and Goodyear (1997) found that engineering was over-represented as an occupation among fathers of individuals with autism, in comparison to fathers of non-autistic individuals. We present further analyses of their data which suggest that while engineering is indeed more common than would be expected, so too are the occupations of medicine, science, and accounting. In addition, skilled and unskilled manual workers are less common as fathers than would be predicted. Moreover, our analyses indicate that accountancy and science may be as strongly associated with fathers of individuals with autism as is engineering. These results could be seen as being consistent with a link between parental occupation and incidence of autism. However, we also consider whether they might arise from a sampling bias, with generally 'less-professional' occupations being under-represented among Baron-Cohen and colleagues' sample. Titre : Does Autism Occur More Often in Families of Physicists, Engineers, and Mathematicians? Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Simon BARON-COHEN, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.296-301 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The study reported here tests a prediction that autism hould occur more often in families of individuals whose occupation requires advanced folk physics but with no requirement of good folk psychology. Physics, engineering, and mathematics are paradigm examples of such occupations. Students in Cambridge University, studying one of these three subjects, were screened anonymously for cases of autism in their families. Relative to a control group of students studying literature, autism was reported to occur significantly more often in families of students in the fields of physics, engineering, and mathematics. Such results are consistent with the prediction. This study necessarily involved anonymous self-report methods, so the reliability and validity of diagnoses are unknown. Future replications should attempt a non-anonymous study so as to establish if this association is robust.
