Correlates of obtained preventive dental services were examined within the ATN sample. Participants included 375 families of children ages 4 to 17 enrolled in the ATN. ATN families reported levels of preventive dental care that were similar to, or exceeded, NSCH-reported care. However, disparities in obtained preventive dental services emerged within the ATN sample. Lower intellectual functioning was the most consistent correlate of reduced access to and completion of preventive dental care. Implications for developing system-wide supports and targeted interventions are discussed. This article aims To perform a literature review about oral health among people with autism spectrum disorder and dental management strategies for this group. An integrative literature review was carried out in three databases, associating the descriptors: (autism or autism spectrum disorder) with (oral health or oral diseases) and (dental care or dental services). After identification and screening steps, 32 articles were included in the study. The most prevalent subjects were oral health conditions, parents' understanding and practical attitudes about oral health, treatment and management strategies, and the use of technology. The principal barriers to dental care were the scarcity of specialized professionals, unpreparedness in the referral system, poor accessibility of the clinics, and lack of specific care protocols. The world literature on the subject is scarce, and there is still a need for investment and scientific production due to the incidence of autism in the world population and the maintenance of difficulties and barriers in offering quality health care to this group. Lay abstract Autism spectrum disorder requires a more careful approach from oral health professionals and a favorable clinical environment related to dental care and assistance. This article has the objective to perform a literature review about the oral health-care knowledge and practices in people with autism spectrum disorder, as well as the characteristics of dental care for this group. The purpose of this study was to provide an increased understanding of these challenges experienced during oral care in the dental office by children with ASD. Method This study was part of a larger mixed methods design and builds on quantitative results from a survey of parents of children with ASD ages 2–18 in which parents reported difficulties with access to care, sensory processing, and uncooperative behaviors. For this study, we conducted two, three hour, focus groups of parents of male children with ASD age 5–18 years in order to explore the survey results in greater depth. Focus group transcripts were analyzed using a template coding approach based on the three domains of office-based oral care challenges identified in the first phase (survey). Results Several related themes emerged including: (1) Access: “Difficult to find the right dentist”, (2) Sensory sensitivities: “All the sensory devices just make him so uncomfortable”, (3) Restraint: “It looked like they were torturing him”, and (4) Drugs: “A mixed bag”. Conclusions The qualitative findings from this study both confirmed our previous survey findings and expanded upon them. These findings can help professionals better understand the challenges experienced by children with ASD and their parents as well as help identify priorities for planning efforts to address the oral health-related needs of this population. Titre : Strategies used for the outpatient dental care of people with autism spectrum disorder: An integrative review Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Davi Silva Carvalho CURI, Auteur ; Victória Eduarda Vasconcelos Liberato MIRANDA, Auteur ; Zayne BARROS DA SILVA, Auteur ; Milcyara Cunha de Lucena BEM, Auteur ; Marcelo Diniz DE PINHO, Auteur ; Adriana Gledys ZINK, Auteur Année de publication : 2022 Article en page(s) : 101903 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism spectrum disorder Dental care Strategies Oral health Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Background Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder with early onset and chronic course. People with this disorder and their caregivers find it difficult to find dentists who provide adequate dental care. The aim of this review was to analyze studies published between 1999 and 2020, available in Portuguese, English or Spanish, on strategies that can be used for outpatient dental care for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Methods A survey was carried out in the Scopus and Medline databases, using the search strategy: (strategies OR approaches OR management OR system) AND ("dental care" OR "oral health" OR dentistry) AND ("autism spectrum disorder" OR autism). The inclusion criteria were: original articles on strategies that could be used for outpatient dental care for people with ASD, published between 1999 and 2020 and available in Portuguese, English or Spanish. Duplicate studies, publications not available in full, conference documents, review articles, books and documents from specialist publications were excluded. For the analysis of methodological quality, the adapted Critical Appraisal Skill Program (CASP) was used. Results The following strategies stood out: visual aids, sedation, training programs, standard behavioral guidance techniques, continuing education directed at parents, resources related to the dental office and the traits of dentists. Conclusions These strategies will be chosen depending on the level of skills and knowledge of the professionals, on their ability to work with specific resources, and mainly on the individual characteristics of the patient, since ASD manifests differently from person to person.
