As individuals with ASD mature, their needs change as well. The book reviews the growing research base and describes ways to support adolescents and adults in succeeding in higher education and work, living independently, enjoying leisure activities, navigating meaningful personal relationships, and more. Specific behavioral and instructional interventions—such as functional communication training, positive behavior support, and applied behavior analysis—are discussed. Case examples illustrate practical aspects of applying the strategies in real-world school and community settings. Titre : Effects of Social Stories on Prosocial Behavior of Preschool Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Shannon CROZIER, Auteur ; Matt TINCANI, Auteur Année de publication : 2007 Article en page(s) : p.1803-1814 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism-spectrum-disorders Social-story Behavior-intervention Early-childhood Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Social Stories™ are a popular intervention for preschool children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), but little research on Social Stories has been conducted with this population. This study investigated the effects of Social Stories on prosocial behavior of three preschool children with ASD in an inclusive setting. An ABAB design was used for two participants, while an ABACBC was used for the third. Social Stories increased appropriate behavior and decreased inappropriate behavior for two participants. The addition of verbal prompts (condition C) was necessary to increase appropriate behavior for the third participant. Maintenance probes were conducted to assess whether stories became imbedded in classroom routines. Results are discussed in relation to applications, study limitations, and areas for future research.

Four secondary students participated in the study (i.e., one 11th, one 10th, one 8th, and one 6th grader). A multiple-probe design with four phases (i.e., baseline, instruction, generalization, maintenance) was used to measure the effects of the test-taking instruction. The results of this study showed that high-functioning adolescents with ASD can successfully acquire, generalize, and maintain the use of a comprehensive test-taking strategy. In addition, both participants' and their parents' satisfaction related to the test-taking instruction was high. Titre : iPod Touch® to Increase Functional Communication of Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Significant Intellectual Disability Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Kaori NEPO, Auteur ; Matt TINCANI, Auteur ; Saul AXELROD, Auteur ; Lois MESZAROS, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.209-217 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and significant intellectual disability (ID) often have limited speech communication abilities. Abundant research supports use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to enhance skills of children with ASD and ID, but less research has examined efficacy of AAC with non-speaking adults. In this study, three adults with ASD and significant ID were taught basic functional communication using the iPod Touch? with MyTalk Mobile? software within a single-case, multiple-probe across-subjects design. The iPod Touch? taught with most-to-least prompting increased participants? independent manding, participants were able to discriminate between picture symbols, and participants? manding generalized to a naturalistic setting with typically available preferred items. Implementation of AAC coincided with increases in speech for one participant. Results illustrate how an applied behavior analysis approach incorporating a speech generating device is effective in teaching communication to adults with ASD and significant ID.
