Trained observers rated positive and negative escalation, mutuality, relationship quality, and satisfaction. Concurrently and two years later, girls’ maladaptive traits were assessed via self- and caregiver-reports based on the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) domains (negative affect, detachment, antagonism, disinhibition, and psychoticism). Using a series of path models, we assessed whether dyadic interactions predicted changes in maladaptive traits. In dyads exhibiting reduced positive interaction patterns, specifically a lack of mutuality and relationship satisfaction, we observed increases in girls’ negative affect, detachment, disinhibition, and psychoticism. These patterns were more pronounced in girls’ self-reports. Negative escalation predicted girl- and caregiver-rated increases in antagonism. The study illustrates the importance of the caregiver–child relationship in the etiology of developmental personality pathology by establishing a link between observed caregiver–adolescent interactions and prospective changes in key domains of maladaptive traits. It expands the literature on dyadic interaction and developmental personality pathology to the dimensional framework of the AMPD. Both parental and peer IER down-regulated negative affect, reflected by girls' decreased likelihood of experiencing continued negative affect. Higher proportions of parental adaptive IER predicted reduced depressive symptoms one year later. Findings suggest that both parents and peers effectively help adolescent girls down-regulate everyday negative emotions; however, parents may offer more enduring benefits for long-term adjustment. The participants rated symptoms three times per day for 1 week. Compliance with the EMA protocol was high. As tested using multilevel modeling, EMA ratings of irritability were strongly and consistently associated with in-clinic, gold-standard measures of irritability. Further, EMA ratings of irritability were significantly related to subjective frustration during a laboratory task eliciting frustrative nonreward. Irritability levels exhibited an expected graduated pattern across diagnostic groups, and the different EMA items measuring irritability were significantly associated with one another within all groups, supporting the transdiagnostic phenomenology of irritability. Additional analyses utilized EMA ratings of anxiety as a comparison with respect to convergent validity and transdiagnostic phenomenology. The results support new measurement tools that can be used in future studies of irritability and frustrative nonreward.
