The GABA in Autism and Related Disorders / Dirk M. DHOSSCHE
Titre : The GABA in Autism and Related Disorders Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Dirk M. DHOSSCHE, Directeur de publication Editeur : Issy les Moulineaux [France] : Academic Press Année de publication : 2005 Collection : International Review of Neurobiology, ISSN 0074-7742 num. 71 Importance : 512 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 22,9cm x 15,2cm x 2,5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-12-366872-1 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Acide ?-aminobutyrique Reelin Oxytocine secretine Index. décimale : SCI-D SCI-D - Neurosciences Résumé : Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) was discovered in the brain in 1950 by Eugene Roberts. GABA is now considered one of the most important neurotransmitters and developmental signals. Knowledge on the complexity of GABA function is increasing exponentially. This volume covers basic research on GABA in the developing brain as it may relate to onset of autism and related developmental disorders. The evidence that dysfunction of GABA and related molecules is associated with autism is limited but expanding and seems to converge. Pertinent data are reviewed in this book and new research avenues in the basic and clinical arenas are described. The topics are of imminent interest to basic and clinical researchers as well as interested clinicians. It: discusses the neuropathology of the GABA system in autism; presents new findings on common genetic mechanisms in Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and autism; includes information on the shared genetic risk factors between autism and major mental disorders; and foreword by Eugene Roberts. STEWART, Auteur ; Jennifer FOLEY, Auteur ; Usa CAIN, Auteur ; Robin PECK, Auteur ; Danielle D. MORRIS, Auteur ; Hongyue WANG, Auteur ; Tristram SMITH, Auteur Année de publication : 2016 Article en page(s) : p.205-220 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Diet therapy Gluten-free Casein-free Treatment outcomes Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : To obtain information on the safety and efficacy of the gluten-free/casein-free (GFCF) diet, we placed 14 children with autism, age 3–5 years, on the diet for 4–6 weeks and then conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled challenge study for 12 weeks while continuing the diet, with a 12-week follow-up. Dietary challenges were delivered via weekly snacks that contained gluten, casein, gluten and casein, or placebo. With nutritional counseling, the diet was safe and well-tolerated. However, dietary challenges did not have statistically significant effects on measures of physiologic functioning, behavior problems, or autism symptoms. Although these findings must be interpreted with caution because of the small sample size, the study does not provide evidence to support general use of the GFCF diet. Titre : The Home TEACCHing Program for Toddlers with Autism Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Aurelie WELTERLIN, Auteur ; Lauren M. TURNER-BROWN, Auteur ; Sandra L. HARRIS, Auteur ; Gary MESIBOV, Auteur ; Lara DELMOLINO, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.1827-1835 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Early intervention TEACCH Home-based intervention Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The study evaluated the efficacy a parent training intervention for children with autism based on the TEACCH model. Twenty families were randomly assigned to the treatment or waitlist group. All families were compared at pre- and post-treatment on formal dependent measures. Direct measures of behavior were compared across six matched pairs using a multiple baseline probe design. The results of the multiple baseline design showed robust support for improvement in child and parent behavior. Due to the sample size and short time frame, results of a repeated measures analysis of variance did not reach significance.
