Titre : Atypical visual orienting to eye gaze and arrow cues in children with high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Johannes E.A. STAUDER, Auteur ; Claudia P.A. BOSCH, Auteur ; Hiske A.M. NUIJ, Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : p.742-748 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Spectrum Disorder Eye gaze cueing Visual orienting Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Although children with autism often fail follow the gaze of others in natural situations they are sensitive to directional cues by eye movements. This suggests that the low-level aspects of gaze cueing and are intact in persons with autism, while the higher level social skills like joint attention and attribution of desire and intention are impaired. The present study investigates whether these low-level aspects of gaze cueing are indeed intact. Children with high functioning ASD (n = 22) and matched controls (n = 22) performed two choice reaction time tasks in which eye- or arrow direction correctly (congruent) or incorrectly (incongruent) cues target location. In children with normal development right side cueing, but not left side cueing, induced a congruence effect for eyes, while this cueing effect was evident for right and left side cueing for arrow cues. In children with ASD left side cueing, but not right side cueing, induced a congruence effect for eyes while right sight cueing, but not left side cueing, provoked a congruence effect for arrow cues. These findings indicate that children with ASD have functional, but atypical, low-level visual orienting to eye gaze and arrow cues. In the current study, 25 parents with a child with high-functioning autism and 25 parents with typically developed children were compared on: (1) the Block Design Test, (2) the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ), and (3) a reaction time task to examine reflexive covert visual orienting to social (eyes) and non-social (arrows) cues. The parent groups were scored similar on the Block Design Test and the AQ. However, fathers with an autistic child demonstrated a different reaction time pattern and responded slower on the social cues than control fathers. These results partly support and further elaborate on the BAP in parents with an autistic child. Titre : Perceptual Processing among High-functioning Persons with Autism Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Laurent MOTTRON, Auteur ; Jacob A. BURACK, Auteur ; Johannes E.A. STAUDER, Auteur ; Philippe ROBAEY, Auteur Année de publication : 1999 Article en page(s) : p.203-211 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autistic disorder hierarchical stimuli local-global processing perception Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Two tasks were used to assess the processing of whole versus parts of objects in a group of high-functioning children and adolescents with autism (N = 11) and a comparison group of typically developing peers (N = 11) matched for chronological age and IQ. In the first task, only the children with autism showed a global advantage, and the two groups showed similar interference between levels. In the second task, the children with autism, despite longer RTs, showed similar performance to the comparison group with regard to the effect of goodness on visual parsing. Contrary to expectations based on the central coherence and hierarchisation deficit theories, these findings indicate intact holistic processing among persons with autism. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to apparently discrepant evidence from other studies. STAUDER, Auteur ; L.J.M. CORNET, Auteur ; R.W.H.M. In this study masculinisation of gender role behaviour is evaluated in 25 persons with an autism spectrum condition (ASC) and matched controls with gender role behaviour as part of a shortened version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 and the Empathizing Quotient and Systemizing Quotient. Both males and females with an ASC showed minimum male role behaviour. It is suggested that the minimum male gender role could be related to an underdeveloped Theory of Mind, a well-known feature of autism.
