Titre : Teaching and Behavior Support for Children and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder : A Practitioner's Guide Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : James K. LUISELLI, Directeur de publication Editeur : Oxford [Angleterre] : Oxford University Press Année de publication : 2011 Importance : 240 p. Format : 17,5cm x 25,4cm x 1,2cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-973640-9 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : APP-A APP-A - ABA - FBA - Approches Comportementales Résumé : The number of children diagnosed with autism has increased dramatically in the last decade, and a growing number of behavior analysts, psychologists, educators, and speech pathologists-to name a few-are just starting to regularly treat individuals with autism. Children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) require specialized instruction and behavior support to teach them critical skills and establish a meaningful quality of life. However, these objectives can only be achieved if professional and paraprofessional service providers have access to the most effective evidence-based and empirically supported methods for teaching children with autism. Similarly, practitioners must know about effective intervention methods that can be implemented to reduce and eliminate problem behaviors frequently displayed by people who have ASD.
This guide is an indispensible asset, appropriate for any behavioral specialist, on all aspects of this increasingly prevalent disorder. Teaching and Behavior Support for Children and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder brings together contributed chapters on assessment, instruction, and behavioral intervention procedures unique to the autism population. Each chapter covers a single topic according to a uniform format, which will ease comprehension and facilitate procedural adaptation in "real world" settings such as school, home, and the community. Usable advice and methods for teaching difficult skills, such as self-care, verbal language, and communication, are provided. Authored by recognized experts, the concise and readable chapters also feature forms, illustrations, summary tables, and resource lists to further guide practitioners in selecting "best practice" methods. Taking into account specific settings, different age groups, and practitioner experience, this book will serve as a resource for educators, psychologists, and behavior specialists in the field of autism education and treatment, and as an educational tool for those enrolled in university classes training to become practitioners.
James K. Luiselli, Ed.D., ABPP, BCBA-D is Senior Vice President of Applied Research, Clinical Training, and Peer Review at May Institute. He is also Director of Training for the institute's Predoctoral Internship Program in Clinical Psychology. Recognized as one of the nation's most influential clinicians in child behavior disorders, autism, and severe special needs. Dr. Luiselli has held previous academic appointments at Harvard University and Northeastern University. He has authored more than 250 publications including the books, Effective Practices for Children with Autism; Antecedent Assessment and Intervention; and Behavior Psychology in the Schools: Innovations in Evaluation, Support, and Consultation.

The Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS) consists of:
The AFLS Guide- A teaching companion that contains task analyses, teaching suggestions, and prompting strategies
Six individually available assessment protocols including Basic Living Skills, Home Skills and Community Participation Skills, School Skills, Independent Living Skills and Vocational Skills
The AFLS is comprised of The AFLS Guide and assessment protocols that assess functional, practical, and essential skills of everyday life. Although each assessment protocol can be used as a standalone assessment, we conceptualize all protocols as being different modules of an extended assessment that exists on a continuum spanning throughout a learner’s life in home, school, and community settings. Each module is different yet each is connected by unifying themes and overarching goals for maximizing a learner’s freedom, independence, and opportunities. Bundle multiple modules and customize the perfect assessment for your setting and situation. The Original AFLS Bundle Set includes Basic Living Skills, Home Skills and Community Participation Skills. Developed for use with children from birth to 36 months, the CCITSN is an easy-to-use, criterion-referenced system that clearly links assessment with intervention and lets professionals work closely with the child's teachers, family members, and other service providers. Already trusted by thousands of early childhood professionals from coast to coast, this proven system is even easier to use with the revisions and updates in this third edition.
View our recorded webinar: The Carolina Curriculum: An Integrated System for Assessment and Intervention presented by Susan Attermeier.
Using The Carolina Curriculum is simple. In each of the age-specific volumes—now reorganized to establish a seamless transition between the two—all the areas to be assessed are clearly laid out in logical sequences in an Assessment Log. A professional observes the child playing with familiar toys and other available materials in a naturalistic environment, and caregivers may or may not participate. After all appropriate activities in each sequence have been observed or attempted, professionals and caregivers examine the strengths and weaknesses revealed during assessment, pinpoint items that need the most work, and select from the teaching activities that correspond to the items in each sequence of the Assessment Log.
CCITSN includes 24 logical teaching sequences covering five developmental domains: personal-social, cognition, communication, fine motor, and gross motor. Curricular sequences each consist of an introduction that explains why that sequence is important; suggested adaptations for children with visual, motor, and hearing impairments; and a list of behaviors associated with that sequence. For each behavior, users get a criterion that pinpoints the objective, a list of suggested materials for eliciting that behavior, procedures that help, and functional activities for encouraging that behavior within the child's daily routine. Appendices cover play and children with motor impairments, using object boards for teaching children with motor impairments, and more.
This book is part of The Carolina Curriculum, a bestselling assessment and intervention program designed for children birth to five with mild to severe disabilities. With this easy-to-use, criterion-referenced system, professionals who work with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers will closely link assessment with intervention and work effectively with the child's teachers, family members, and other service providers. All students deserve a positive school experience where they can reach their social and academic potential. However, this can prove difficult for students with challenges such as attention deficit, anxiety, or autism spectrum disorders, who may struggle daily with social situations. This manual provides everything educators need to support these students with their social skills in everyday situations, throughout their school years.
This program is designed to help any student with social challenges, no matter how subtle. For students without social challenges, it teaches tolerance, acceptance and understanding. The characteristics of successful social skills programs are described, with an emphasis on how FRIEND implements them through three key components: the Peer Sensitivity Curriculum, the FRIEND Lunch Program and the FRIEND Playground Program. These can be implemented individually or in any combination as a comprehensive program. Parents and family are offered information on working together with schools and implementing FRIEND strategies at home and in the community.
Emphasizing peer sensitivity, education and a supportive environment, FRIEND is for any educator wanting to create an inclusive and safe atmosphere for students to learn social skill-building strategies.
