We sought to examine sex differences in 5–9-year-old females and males with HFASDs within a narrow range of ages before adolescence in order to identify the noticeable autistic profile of females compared to males. Using the Japanese version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale-Tokyo Version (CARS-TV), 20 females with HFASDs were compared with 26 males with HFASDs. Although females and males with HFASDs share similar cognitive profiles in WISC-III, females demonstrated a different symptom profile from males in CARS-TV. Although the female subjects scored significantly lower than the male subjects on “Body Use,” “Object Use,” and “Activity Level,” female subjects scored significantly higher than males on “Taste, Smell, and Touch Response and Use” in the CARS-TV. This finding can be useful for the early identification of females with HFASDs who have typically been underdiagnosed. Future research should focus on elucidating the possible behavioral, neurological, and genetic links to these sex differences. Here, we tested for the first time, how ASD traits are related to gray matter structural differences (and particularly cortical thickness) in both ASD and typically developing adults. Motor scores from the Mullen Scales of Early Learning at 7 months were used as predictors of language growth. Gross Motor scores predicted the subsequent rate of expressive, but not receptive, language development in at-risk siblings who were later diagnosed with ASD. Although the pattern was similar for fine motor skills, the relationship did not reach significance. It seems that early motor delay impacts the rate of development of expressive language, and this may be of particular importance to infants at increased risk of developing ASD. In the line-drawing task, the two groups had the same degree of delta/theta synchronization in the central and occipital–parietal regions and comparable phase synchronization between scalp regions. We conclude by hypothesizing that AS patients might have structural deficits in the amygdala and its related limbic structures, a site critical for recognition of emotional faces beyond conscious awareness, but that they preserve the intact function in the cognitive pathway to keep up comparable behavioral performances with the healthy controls through voluntary control of attention.
