We also examined autism status and early parenting as predictors of subsequent behavioral trajectories. We found that attention problems and aggressive behavior declined steadily from childhood through adolescence whereas anxious/depressed behavior demonstrated relative stability over the same period. Youth with highly flexible mothers displayed more optional trajectories of improvement in attention problems. DAVIDSON, Auteur ; Kandace K. FLEMING, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.1-24 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Visual, as compared to verbal, tasks are often assumed to be easier for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but is this true for story comprehension? This study evaluated story comprehension monitoring across visual, listening, and written modalities and assessed predictors in two closely matched groups (age, socioeconomic status, language, nonverbal cognition, and word reading) of children and adolescents (8 “14 years) with ASD (n=20) and typical development (typically developing [TD]; n=20). The results of mixed-effects models indicated that story comprehension monitoring was low overall, and performance was comparable across visual, listening, and written modalities for participants with ASD. Age, vocabulary, nonverbal working memory, response and distractor inhibition, and social communication significantly predicted comprehension monitoring. FLEMING, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.863-873 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Symbolic play Developmental delays Preschool Cognition Language delays Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Children with autism are often described as having deficient play skills, particularly symbolic play. We compared the play of 35 children with autism to 38 children with other developmental delays. All children were preschool-age and produced less than 20 different words. Results indicated no significant differences across the two groups in their play. Children with autism engaged in more conventional play, that is, putting objects together according to how the toys were constructed (e.g., pieces in a puzzle, lid on a teapot). Results also indicated high correlations between play, language, and cognitive measures. Findings indicate that play relates to language and cognitive levels yet may not discriminate children with autism and children with other developmental delays early in their development. Titre : The Longitudinal Effects of Parenting on Adaptive Behavior in Children with Fragile X Syndrome Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Steven F. WARREN, Auteur ; Nancy C. BRADY, Auteur ; Kandace K. FLEMING, Auteur ; Laura J. HAHN, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.768-784 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Fragile X syndrome Maternal responsivity Adaptive behavior Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Several studies have reported declines in adaptive behavior amongst children with fragile X syndrome (FXS) starting in middle childhood. We examined the effects of maternal responsivity on adaptive behavior in 55 children with FXS visited 5–6 times in their homes from early through middle childhood. Our analyses indicated that sustained maternal responsivity had a significant positive impact on the trajectories of communication and to a lesser extent other adaptive behavior domains through middle childhood with many effects remaining significant after controlling for autism symptoms and developmental level. For children who showed declines in adaptive behavior during middle childhood, sustained high levels of maternal responsivity minimized the amount of decline observed in the communication, socialization, and daily living domains.
