Siblings As Change Agents For Promoting The Functional Status Of Children With Cerebral Palsy / Martha J. CRAFT in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology, 32-12 (December 1990)
[article]
Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=135

HESSE in Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, 7-11 (November 2013)

Titre : Siblings of children with autism: Predictors of adjustment Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Tessa L. HESSE, Auteur ; Christina M. DANKO, Auteur ; Karen S. BUDD, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.1323-1331 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Adjustment Siblings Autism spectrum disorder Parents Sibling adjustment Parent satisfaction Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Abstract As the prevalence of autism increases, so does the need to examine the effects of autism on family members of children with autism. The current study evaluated possible predictors of adjustment in siblings of children with autism. Aspects of the parents’ functioning as caregivers for a child with autism were examined to determine whether they predicted the adjustment of the child's sibling. Two hundred caregivers of 4–10-year-old children with autism who had at least one sibling without autism participated by filling out questionnaires online. Parental satisfaction with the role of caregiver for the child with autism was negatively correlated with difficulties in sibling adjustment, and it was the only significant predictor of sibling adjustment in a hierarchical regression analysis. Parental stress and parental self-efficacy were not unique contributors to sibling adjustment when other parental variables were considered. No significant relationship was found between parental therapy involvement and sibling adjustment, or between parental educational involvement and sibling adjustment. The lack of parental involvement as a predictor of sibling adjustment adds new findings to the current literature, which had found such a relationship in a previous study with a smaller sample. Titre : Siblings of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder: Sibling relationships and wellbeing in adolescence and adulthood Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Gael I. ORSMOND, Auteur ; Marsha MAILICK SELTZER, Auteur ; Hsin-Yu KUO, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p.59-80 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : autism sibling-relationships siblings Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : We investigated sibling relationships and wellbeing in adolescents and adults with a sibling with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Adolescents engaged in more shared activities than did adults. Adolescents reported greater social support, greater use of emotion-focused coping strategies, and less use of problem-focused coping than adults. In adulthood, females with a sister with ASD reported the most positive affect in the sibling relationship and men with a sister with ASD the least. Adolescents engaged in more shared activities and reported more positive affect in their sibling relationship when their sibling with ASD had fewer behavior problems; greater use of problem-focused coping buffered the negative effects of behavior problems on sibling engagement. For adults, more shared activities were observed when the sibling with ASD was younger in age and had fewer behavior problems; greater positive affect in sibling relationships was predicted by greater parental support. Titre : Siblings of Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Theoretical Perspectives on Sibling Relationships and Individual Adjustment Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Susan M. MCHALE, Auteur ; Kimberly A. UPDEGRAFF, Auteur ; Mark E. FEINBERG, Auteur Année de publication : 2016 Article en page(s) : p.589-602 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism spectrum disorder Sibling relationships Youth adjustment Family Close relationship theory Prevention Intervention Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : A burgeoning research literature investigates the sibling relationships of youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their implications for individual adjustment. Focusing on four relationship domains—behaviors, emotions, cognitions and involvement—and toward advancing this generally atheoretical literature, we review and apply tenets from a range of theoretical perspectives in an effort to illuminate the mechanisms underlying sibling relationship experiences and their adjustment implications. Our review suggests new directions for research to test theoretically-grounded hypotheses about how sibling relationships develop and are linked to individual adjustment. In addition, we consider how identifying underlying bio-psycho-social processes can aid in the development of interventions to promote warm and involved sibling relationships and positive youth development. Titre : Siblings, Parents, and Partners: Family Relationships within a Longitudinal Community Study Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Judy DUNN, Auteur ; Kirby DEATER-DECKARD, Auteur ; Kevin PICKERING, Auteur ; Jean GOLDING, Auteur Année de publication : 1999 Article en page(s) : p.1025-1037 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Divorce family structure gender marital relationships mothers siblings Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Links between sibling relationships, mother-partner, and parent-child relationships were studied in a longitudinal community sample of 3681 sibling pairs. Individual differences in sibling relationship quality were related to mother-partner affection and hostility assessed 4 years earlier, to contemporary parent-child negativity, and to indices of social adversity. Evidence for both direct and indirect pathways (via parent-child relations) linking mother-partner and sibling relations were found. Comparisons of prediction for non-stepfamilies and stepfather families showed similarities in patterns of association, but also differences: In stepfather families, mother-partner hostility was unrelated to parent-child negativity and sibling relationship quality. Both positivity and negativity towards young siblings decreased with the age of older siblings, and older sisters were more positive than older brothers.
