60 Social Situations and Discussion Starters to Help Teens on the Autism Spectrum Deal with Friendships, Feelings, Conflict and More / Lisa A. TIMMS
Titre : 60 Social Situations and Discussion Starters to Help Teens on the Autism Spectrum Deal with Friendships, Feelings, Conflict and More : Seeing the Big Picture Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Lisa A. TIMMS, Auteur Editeur : Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers Année de publication : 2011 Importance : 160 p. Format : 15,3cm x 23cm x 1,2cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84905-862-9 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : HAB-A HAB-A - Habiletés Sociales - Méthodes et Programmes Résumé : Teenagers and older children on the autism spectrum are, like everyone else, surrounded by complex social codes and rules that govern everyday interaction, but have much more difficulty in interpreting them. Reading cues such as sarcasm, idioms and body language often presents an impossible challenge, but this book of realistic and thought-provoking stories provides much needed help.
Written with both parent and teen in mind, every story outlines a real-life situation that young people on the autism spectrum are likely to encounter. Each story is followed by questions such as 'what else might he have done?', 'how do you think she felt?' and 'why do you think they were upset?' along with practical tips for parents on how to initiate constructive discussions. As teens consider these questions with adults, they will begin to be able to put themselves into someone else's shoes and think about how their actions and behaviour may affect those around them. This process will equip them to transfer this invaluable understanding and confidence to other everyday life situations.
Packed with 60 stories exploring real-life situations, this book will be an essential tool for parents, caregivers, teachers, and anyone else wishing to enable young people on the autism spectrum to acquire great social skills.
Lisa Timms has an MS in Special Education from the University of Scranton in Scranton, PA. She has worked alongside autistic individuals for many years in a variety of roles, and is now Learning Disabilities Coordinator at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA. In the past, Lisa has held social skills classes and parent training sessions, and currently teaches special education courses for the education department at King's College. She resides in Pittston, PA.

Shortlisted for the 2007 Eve Pownall Award for Information Books by the Children's Book Council of Australia
'There is a great deal of truth in humour. If you have only just begun to discover why someone with Asperger's syndrome is different, this book will inform and entertain you. The descriptions provide an accurate balance between the qualities and difficulties associated with Asperger's syndrome, while the photographs will make the journey of discovery enjoyable and remarkable.'
- Tony Attwood, author of Asperger's Syndrome and The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome
'The one thing I notice most about cats, and respect them for, is their independence. It's a funny thing because this is also what I notice about my Aspie friends. In fact, I see this in my own life as well. It's a unique quality that sets us apart from most other humans. Just like cats are not like dogs. I mean we wouldn't want them to be, would we? Kathy's humorous book that highlights the unique qualities of individuals with Asperger's has us "down to a T".'
- Wendy Lawson, author of many books on the autism spectrum

Titre : An Animated Introduction to Asperger Syndrome Type de document : Vidéo Auteurs : BIOMATION, Auteur Editeur : Londres [Angleterre] : Jessica Kingsley Publishers Année de publication : 2010 Importance : 30 mn Format : 13,5cm x 19cm x 1,5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84905-134-7 Note générale : DVD Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : ASP-M ASP-M - Asperger - Vidéos Résumé : Living with Asperger's Syndrome can be difficult, and explaining it to others can often seem more of a challenge than coping with AS itself. This short, simple and accessible film explains through a series of lively animations what AS is, what it feels like and how it can be helped, in a way that is both informative and easy to understand.
Created by children in conjunction with professional animators, this highly entertaining film concisely summarises the basics of AS, enabling viewers of all ages to gain a real insight into the condition in less than half an hour. Covering everything from common talents of those with AS to skills and activities they might find more difficult, the film looks at life as an Aspie from a variety of different perspectives. Using a winning combination of humour and frank discussion to explore AS, the DVD comprises a main feature film, which is complemented by an array of vox pops, interviews, slideshows, and other additional material, documenting how the film was made and further exploring what AS means to different people.
This insightful and innovative DVD will be of interest to everyone wishing to learn about AS, from children in schools, to families of those with the disorder and professionals working alongside them. It is an ideal first step towards understanding Asperger's Syndrome.
