[article]
Titre : Expectations of Transition-Age Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder Toward Postsecondary Education Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Seunghee LEE, Auteur ; David R. JOHNSON, Auteur ; Yi-Chen WU, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.35?44 Mots-clés : autism spectrum disorder (ASD) postsecondary education expectations goal setting Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with expectations regarding postsecondary education of students with autism spectrum disorder between the ages of 16 and 21 years. We conducted logistic regressions using variables at the student, family, and school levels using the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2012. Logistic regression results showed that parental expectations for attending college was the only significant predictor of students? own educational expectations. Students? adaptive functioning, autonomy levels, demographic and family variables, parent involvement, and prior roles in Individualized Education Program/transition planning were not significant predictors. Future research needs to examine how schools can develop effective ways to increase both students? and parents? expectations toward postsecondary education. Titre : Parents’ Perspectives on Participating in Genetic Research in Autism Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Magan TROTTIER, Auteur ; Wendy ROBERTS, Auteur ; Irene E. DRMIC, Auteur ; Stephen SCHERER, Auteur ; Rosanna WEKSBERG, Auteur ; Cheryl CYTRYNBAUM, Auteur ; David CHITAYAT, Auteur ; Cheryl SHUMAN, Auteur ; Fiona A. MILLER, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.556-568 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Parent experiences Genetic research Motivations Expectations Genetic result Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Genetic research in autism depends on the willingness of individuals with autism to participate; thus, there is a duty to assess participants’ needs in the research process. We report on families’ motives and expectations related to their participation in autism genetic research. Respondents valued having a genetic result, as it alleviates guilt, promotes awareness, and may be used to tailor interventions and for family planning. The act of participating was distinctly significant, as it provided personal control, a connection to autism experts, networking with families, and hope for the future. The results of this study highlight complex factors involved in families’ decisions to participate in autism genetic research and provide points to consider for this population of research participants. GORDILLO in Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 52-12 (December 2022)

Titre : Differences in Processes Underlying Autism Service Engagement Among Latina and Non-Latina Mothers Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Monica L. GORDILLO, Auteur ; Andrea CHU, Auteur ; Kristin LONG, Auteur Année de publication : 2022 Article en page(s) : p.5440-5450 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Female Child Humans Autistic Disorder/therapy Autism Spectrum Disorder/therapy Hispanic or Latino Mothers Child Development Disorders, Pervasive Autism Disparities Expectations Latinos Service barriers Service-seeking Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Latino children on the autism spectrum experience less access to autism services and more barriers to service-use than non-Latino White children. Yet, existing research leaves unanswered questions about how cultural, family, and service system-level processes contribute to autism service-use disparities. This study aimed to qualitatively explore how Latina and non-Latina mothers experience similar encounters with autism services. Twenty Latina and non-Latina mothers completed semi-structured interviews regarding their experiences accessing services. Data were analyzed using applied thematic analysis. Ethnicity-based differences emerged in mothers' service-use motivations (i.e., desiring ongoing support vs. eventual departure), service evaluations (i.e., dissatisfaction vs. satisfaction), and service-seeking approaches (i.e., proactive vs. reactive). Findings illustrate how these processes underlying service engagement may contribute to service disparities for Latino children.
