Titre : Participation According to Clinicians Working with Young Children with Developmental Disabilities: A Long Way to Go Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Marieke COUSSENS, Auteur ; Jeroen MAES, Auteur ; Annemie DESOETE, Auteur ; Guy VANDERSTRAETEN, Auteur ; Hilde VAN WAELVELDE, Auteur ; Dominique VAN DE VELDE, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.4883-4896 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Spectrum Disorder Caregivers Child Child, Preschool Developmental Disabilities Family Humans Qualitative Research Developmental disabilities Participation Participation-based approaches Young children Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Participation has become an important measure of outcome in child rehabilitation as young children with developmental disabilities are increasingly at risk of decreased participation. Therefore, this study garnered information on clinicians' perspectives regarding perceived facilitators and barriers when rendering participation-based interventions using a qualitative research design. Semi-structured interviews of clinicians (Ns=12, 25-57 years) were conducted and evaluated via an inductive thematic analysis. Results denote that current mechanisms of providing participation-based interventions resembled traditionally focused interventions; thus, resulting in a knowledge-to-practice gap. Clinicians desired more opportunities to communicate with caregivers and to be able to influence the children' s natural environments. They also identified shortness of time, resources, and rigid health care regulations as barriers hampering the efficacy of participation-based services. Titre : Predictors of handwriting in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Tinneke HELLINCKX, Auteur ; Herbert ROEYERS, Auteur ; Hilde VAN WAELVELDE, Auteur Année de publication : 2013 Article en page(s) : p.176–186 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Handwriting Autism Spectrum Disorders Predictors Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : During writing, perceptual, motor, and cognitive processes interact. This study explored the predictive value of several factors on handwriting quality as well as on speed in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our results showed that, in this population, age, gender, and visual-motor integration significantly predicted handwriting quality, whereas age, reading abilities, and fine motor coordination had an impact on handwriting speed. These results indicate that, although reading abilities are often overlooked, handwriting remediation in children with ASD should tackle reading skills as well. Titre : Vestibular Function in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Systematic Review Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ruth VAN HECKE, Auteur ; Maya DANNEELS, Auteur ; Ingeborg DHOOGE, Auteur ; Hilde VAN WAELVELDE, Auteur ; Jan R. WIERSEMA, Auteur ; Frederik J.A. DECONINCK, Auteur ; Leen MAES, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.3328-3350 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Children Neurodevelopmental disorders Systematic review Vestibular function Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : This review was performed to investigate the characteristics of vestibular dysfunctions in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). The majority of the included studies reported central and/or peripheral vestibular aberrations in a subset of these children. These alterations may result in symptoms of distorted motor coordination or postural instability, and might explain some of the balance problems observed in this population. However, high-quality studies with an extensive vestibular test battery are required to further characterize the vestibular function in NDDs since current findings are ambiguous and mainly based on evaluation of the horizontal semicircular canals alone. Importantly, since vestibular dysfunctions may result in comparable characteristics as found in NDDs, clinicians should be aware of these similarities when establishing the NDD diagnosis.
