The Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire for ASD (IPQ-R-ASD) offers a systematic way to measure parent parents’ perceptions of ASD cause, but further study is needed. Method Using principal component analysis (PCA), we investigated the factor structure of the IPQ-R-ASD Cause scale, which was administered online, in a sample of 326 North American parents (287 mothers [88 %], 39 fathers) raising children with confirmed ASD diagnoses. Results Six factors emerged on the Cause subscale and were labeled Personal Attributions, Parental Risk Factors, Environmental Risk Factors, Utero/Birth Stress, Biophysiological, and Metaphysical. Together, these factors accounted for a cumulative variance of 61.4 %. All items exceeded the minimum loading to be considered robust, and all but one loaded positively (i.e., “Will of God). Conclusions Understanding parental perceptions about the cause of their children’s ASD may help researchers and clinicians understand important aspects of raising a child with ASD, such as stress and coping responses, treatment selection and implementation, or shared decision-making about service use. Since measurement of causal beliefs is an important initial step in this direction, the current study is helpful in establishing the viability of a measure that may extend this line of research and, ultimately, the instrument’s clinical utility. Specifically, we hypothesized that different ways of perceiving autism – as a disorder or as a neurodivergence – may contribute to the way autistic adolescents feel about their own well-being. Method We tested 27 dyads of adolescents with ASC and normal intellectual ability; and their mothers. We assessed the child’s depressive symptoms and attitudes towards autism; we controlled the child’s IQ and autism severity (by ADOS-2). Results We found large discrepancies between adolescent’s and mother’s reports of adolescent’s depressive symptoms and their predictors. Higher maternal distress and lower autism severity predicted an increased level of depressive symptoms in the child, only in the mother’s report. Attitude towards autism was not a significant factor in predicting the child’s depressive symptoms, but it leaned toward significance in the child’s self-assessment. Conclusions Given the differences between adolescents and maternal perspectives, the subjective experiences of adolescents with ASC should be taken into account to a greater extent. It is worth exploring whether adolescents with ASC might benefit from perceiving autism as a neurodivergence. Of the 94 identified papers, 11 met requirements for inclusion in the review. Data was extracted from these papers to describe the steps of Photovoice used by the researchers in their studies with participants on the autism spectrum. Results Researchers in the reviewed papers conducted the major stages of Photovoice methodology developed by Wang and Burris (1997) to accomplish their studies, including engagement, data collection, data analysis, and outcome dissemination with participants on the autism spectrum. The meta-synthesis of the literature also identified that researchers made modifications to Photovoice methodology to fit in with purposes of their studies and, more importantly, to facilitate communication and enhance meaningful participation of people on the autism spectrum in research. Conclusion Photovoice can facilitate engagement of people on the autism spectrum in research.Future studies using Photovoice should include visual cues and verbal prompts to support communication of participants and become inclusive for people who are on the autism spectrum and with non-verbal abilities by offering them more alternatives of communication. Method We examined parental and day care professional (DCP) assessments of ASD symptom severity among children at school year start and end, in relation to selective eating. We included 62 children aged 19–45 months diagnosed with ASD attending government-funded Early Intervention Day Care Centers (EIDCCs). EIDCCs, designated for children diagnosed with ASD, provide standard comprehensive multidisciplinary ASD-specific treatments. Results Results showed parental reports of children’s ASD symptoms were positively associated with selective eating consistently over time. In contrast, DCP reports were not associated with selective eating, despite long acquaintance with the children. When comparing ASD symptoms of selective eaters vs. non-selective eaters, the gap between parental and DCP assessments was smaller among selective eaters. Generally, parents reported less severe ASD symptoms compared to DCPs, yet, over time, both parents and DCPs reported improvement. A decrease in food diversity was also found associated with age, originating as early as toddlerhood. Conclusion Differences between parents and day care professionals on assessments of ASD symptom severity, in relation to parent reports of selective eating behavior, were maintained over time. Our findings emphasize the importance of early interventions that address atypical eating habits at young ages. Previous research demonstrated the validity and reliability of an algorithm called Computerized Assessment of Motor Imitation (CAMI) using 3D depth cameras. However, incorporating CAMI into serious games and making it accessible in clinic and home settings requires a more scalable approach that uses “off-the-shelf” 2D cameras. Method In a brief (one-minute) task, children (23 ASD, 17 typically developing [TD]) imitated a model’s dance movements while simultaneously being recorded using Kinect Xbox motion tracking technology (Kinect 3D) and a single 2D camera. Pose-estimation software (OpenPose 2D) was used on the 2D camera video to fit a skeleton to the imitating child. Motor imitation scores computed from the fully automated OpenPose 2D CAMI method were compared to scores computed from the Kinect 3D CAMI and Human Observation Coding (HOC) methods. Results Motor imitation scores obtained from the OpenPose 2D CAMI method were significantly correlated with scores obtained from the Kinect 3D CAMI method (r40 = 0.82, p < 0.001) and the HOC method (r40 = 0.80, p < 0.001). Both 2D and 3D CAMI methods showed better discriminative ability than the HOC, with the Kinect 3D CAMI method outperforming the OpenPose 2D CAMI method (area under ROC curve (AUC): AUCHOC = 0.799, AUC2D-CAMI = 0.876, AUC3D-CAMI = 0.94). Finally, all motor imitation scores were significantly associated with the social-communication impairment (all p ? 0.003).
