NSSI behavior and implicit NSSI associations were assessed annually in school at three time points. Results Adolescents who engaged in NSSI exhibited stronger implicit self-identification with NSSI than adolescents who did not engage in NSSI. Moreover, implicit NSSI identification was stronger among adolescents who engaged in cutting, frequent NSSI, and recent NSSI. A reciprocal association was observed between NSSI frequency and implicit NSSI identification over 1 year. Notably, implicit NSSI identification uniquely and prospectively predicted engagement in NSSI over the subsequent year. Conclusions Implicit self-identification with NSSI may track both trait- and state-related changes in the behavior and, importantly, may help predict continued engagement in NSSI. This paper examines how intersectional marginalized identities may predict the onset of suicidal behaviors among preadolescent youth. Methods The Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study is a prospective cohort study with annual assessments of youth ages 9 and 10 and their caregivers. Lifetime suicide attempts and preparatory suicidal behaviors were assessed annually. Survival models examined overall trends and demographic differences in the onset of suicidal behaviors. Results The final sample included 11,223 participants (mean age?=?9.9?years old, SD?=?7.5?months). 5,280 (47%) reported a minoritized racial/ethnic identity, and 1,410 (12.6%) were categorized as sexual or gender minorities. 208 suicide attempts and 143 instances of preparatory suicidal behaviors were reported across the study period. An interaction effect was found such that youth who hold multiple minoritized identities (i.e., sexual and gender minority youth from minoritized racial/ethnic backgrounds) were at elevated risk for onset of both suicide attempts (HR?=?2.97, 95% CI?=?1.59?5.56, p?=?.001) and preparatory suicidal behaviors (b?=?3.09, 95% CI?=?1.38?6.93, p?=?.006). Conclusions Intersectional marginalized identities were associated with earlier onset of suicide attempts and preparatory suicidal behaviors. Thirty-six autistic adults participated in studies to assess the acceptability of the ESP intervention to cope with stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic and postsecondary education and feasibility of the study design elements to inform future trials. Most participants reported using strategies from their ESP; 86%-89% reported the intervention had a positive impact on them and 67%-71% would recommend it to another person. Completion of weekly monitoring and outcome assessments were high; ecological momentary assessment was more variable. The current results provide preliminary support for the acceptability of the ESP intervention. Important insights were also gained to inform feasibility of the design to assess its potential efficacy in future studies. While further research is clearly needed, the brief nature of the ESP may provide benefit as a starting point for those who may be proactively seeking support to cope with anticipated stressors or those who would benefit from guidance to promote emotion regulation during stressful life events. Lay abstract Autistic adults may have difficulty coping during stressful periods, which could make them more vulnerable to depression and anxiety.
