Abstract :
Autism is an early pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by severe difficulties in social interactions, communication and regulation of activities. An attempt to explain these behavioural disturbances has been made by the hypothesis of a primary cognitive deficit. This deficit was supposed to be focused either on a theory of mind mechanism responsible of the understanding and the attribution of mental states to oneself and to others, or on executive functions defined as a complex set of cognitive processes underlying the planning, the monitoring and the execution of actions and thoughts.
First we present the theoretical, developmental and neurobiological foundations of theory of mind and executive functions. Secondly we specify the main findings in favour of their disruption in autism and consider the limits and the possible relations between these two functions. This leads us to hypothesize that both theory of mind and executive functions may depend on the early development of mechanisms involved in action perception and action representation.
To test this hypothesis, we elaborated two experimental paradigms: the first one assesses the abilities in arranging sequences of goal-directed actions and the second one tests the perception of sequences of goal-directed actions. These devices were based on the premise that the representations of action are organized in a complex hierarchical structure monitoring the execution and the planning of our own activities as well as the perception of the actions of other people.
The results show that the autistic subjects have difficulties in the conceptual organization of action knowledge especially that associated with object function and with the elaboration of temporal and causal links between the different stages necessary to the achievement of a goal. Consequently, deficits in theory of mind and executive functions observed in autism could result from a more fundamental and low level disorder disturbing the processes of perception and representation of the goal-directed structure of movements, acts and more complex actions.

COOK, Auteur ; Geoffrey BIRD, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.1045-1051 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Imitation Mirror neuron Social priming Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Appropriate modulation of imitation according to social context is important for successful social interaction. In the present study we subliminally primed high-functioning adults with ASC and age- and IQ-matched controls with either a pro- or non- social attitude. Following priming, an automatic imitation paradigm was used to acquire an index of imitation. Whereas imitation levels were higher for pro-socially primed relative to non-socially primed control participants, there was no difference between pro- and non- socially primed individuals with ASC. We conclude that high-functioning adults with ASC demonstrate atypical social modulation of imitation. Given the importance of imitation in social interaction we speculate that difficulties with the modulation of imitation may contribute to the social problems characteristic of ASC. And while we have become increasingly familiar with the term autistic thinking, people with autism are still misunderstood, leading to frustration, depression and missed opportunities to reach one’s potential. According to Peter Vermeulen, treatment of autism is still too focused on behavior and minimally focused on observation or determining the way of thinking that leads to the behavior. In this groundbreaking book, inspired by the ideas of Uta Frith, the internationally known psychologist and a pioneer in theory of mind as it relates to autism, Vermeulen explains in everyday terms how the autistic brain functions with a particular emphasis on the apparent lack of sensitivity to and awareness of the context in which things happen. Full of examples, often humorous, the book goes on to examine “context” as it relates to observation, social interactions, communication and knowledge. The book concludes with a major section on how to reduce context blindness in these various areas, vital for successful functioning. Due to the far-reaching consequences of context blindness, this book is a must for those living and working with somebody with autism.
