Gaze Performance in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder when Observing Communicative Actions / Terje FALCK-YTTER in Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 42-10 (October 2012)
[article]
Titre : Gaze Performance in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder when Observing Communicative Actions Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Terje FALCK-YTTER, Auteur ; Elisabeth FERNELL, Auteur ; Åsa LUNDHOLM HEDVALL, Auteur ; Claes VON HOFSTEN, Auteur ; Christopher GILLBERG, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.2236-2245 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Joint attention Eye-movements Eye-tracking Adaptive behaviour Individual differences Intelligence Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : The main purpose of this eye tracking study was to map the correlates of gaze performance in a brief test of spontaneous gaze and point-gesture following in young children with autistic disorder (AD), Pervasive developmental disorder—not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), or typical development (TD). Gaze measures included the children’s spontaneous tendency to look at the correct (attended) toy, and the latency of their correct responses. In addition to group differences (AD vs. TD), we found that in AD, accuracy of performance was specifically related to adaptive communication skills. The study also indicated that the latency of correct gaze shifts is related to verbal intelligence. These results have direct implications for our understanding of (responsive) joint attention impairments in AD. Titre : Goal-Directed and Goal-Less Imitation in Autism Spectrum Disorder Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Kelly S. WILD, Auteur ; Ellen POLIAKOFF, Auteur ; Andrew JERRISON, Auteur ; Emma GOWEN, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.1739-1749 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Imitation Autism spectrum disorder Motor control Eye movements Sensorimotor integration Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : To investigate how people with Autism are affected by the presence of goals during imitation, we conducted a study to measure movement kinematics and eye movements during the imitation of goal-directed and goal-less hand movements. Our results showed that a control group imitated changes in movement kinematics and increased the level that they tracked the hand with their eyes, in the goal-less compared to goal-direction condition. In contrast, the ASD group exhibited more goal-directed eye movements, and failed to modulate the observed movement kinematics successfully in either condition. These results increase the evidence for impaired goal-less imitation in ASD, and suggest that there is a reliance on goal-directed strategies for imitation in ASD, even in the absence of visual goals. Titre : Joint attention in autism: Teaching smiling coordinated with gaze to respond to joint attention bids Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Ivana KRSTOVSKA-GUERRERO, Auteur ; Emily A. JONES, Auteur Année de publication : 2013 Article en page(s) : p.93-108 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Joint attention Affect Gaze shift Eye contact Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Children with autism demonstrate early deficits in joint attention and expressions of affect. Interventions to teach joint attention have addressed gaze behavior, gestures, and vocalizations, but have not specifically taught an expression of positive affect such as smiling that tends to occur during joint attention interactions. Intervention was applied to teach smile and gaze shift with eye contact to respond to others’ joint attention instructions. All targeted responses increased during intervention, with generalized performance as well as maintenance of performance during follow-up. Related measures of joint attention and characteristics of autism showed overall improvements from pre- to post-intervention.
