Because these children benefit from regular instruction and practice, the program uses an intensive proactive approach to teach social skills by combining written instruction with games, experiential stories, and role play, which results in discussion, friendly feedback from peers, and realworld experience. Even when provided with an inclusive education in a general education setting, these students do not typically interpret social cues, nuances and rules of interaction in the same way as their peers, which is the reason the program maximizes generalization of skills both in and outside the classroom. The goals of the program are to help students gain a better understanding of human behavior and interaction and to provide opportunities to become familiar and comfortable with the social skills and pragmatic language necessary to be successful at school and in the community. The question is not why, but why not? With inclusive education becoming
the norm in schools nationwide, teachers often struggle to address students non-academic needs, but
teachers need ready-to-use lessons that won't interfere with their curriculum. Quest Program II is a social
skills program created to help middle school students with autism who struggle with social skills and pragmatic
language.
Developed by a school social worker and speech language pathologist, the program uses an intensive,
proactive approach to teaching social skills, combining written instruction with games, activities, and student
interaction. Six helpful units: School Survival Basics, Understanding and Managing Emotions, Communication
Skills, Making Friends and Interacting with Peers, Personal Safety, Vocational Readiness can be implemented
either chronologically or on their own.
Evidence-based research supports the methods used and students have a great time learning-by-doing,
through role-play and real-world experience. Parents are kept in the loop with email updates and evaluations.
Everyone wins with this program! Best of all, the book includes a CD of printable worksheets, letters, forms,
and more! QUEST Program II covers: Greetings, Paying Attention, Daily Hygiene, Asking for Help,
Understanding Feelings, Getting Angry/Calming Down, Managing Stress, Starting a Conversation, Making and
Keeping Friends, Gossiping, Bullying, and Teasing, Resisting Peer Pressure, Dating, Internet and E-mail

After reviewing techniques designed to help parents and therapists tailor the manual to the needs of the teens with whom they are working, the text moves on to the individual treatment sessions and strategies for tackling issues such as developing conversational skills, choosing friends, using humor, get-togethers, teasing, bullying, gossiping, and handling disagreements. Each session chapter includes handouts, homework assignments, descriptions of what to expect (and how to handle challenges in delivering the intervention), and customized tips for both parents and therapists.

The emphasis is on integrated working practices that cross professional boundaries particularly for teachers and speech language therapists. Although it would make sense to apply the programme primarily to able and verbal children with an autistic spectrum disorder, the authors believe that a social-skills approach is relevant to the needs of a much wider group of children than those with a formal diagnosis. At the early-years level the programme introduces children to good attention behaviour, which includes looking, listening and turn-taking. By adolescence, the participants are helped to deal effectively with real-life situations, as well as gaining some insight into the thoughts, perspectives and intentions of others. "The programmes can be integrated to include aspects of the national curriculum, and their usefulness lies in their flexibility. "The session plans can be used as presented, or adjusted to meet the needs of particular groups in both clinical and educational settings. "Reflects the current focus for inclusion and the integration of children with special needs into mainstream educational settings. The book helps educators instruct youth on conversing with others, displaying appropriate body language, managing anxiety, initiating and participating in get-togethers, and more. The book is filled with helpful information on ASD to aid teachers who have received little training on the topic. Extremely practical, the book includes lesson plans, checklists, and sidebars with helpful advice.
•Based on UCLA's acclaimed PEERS program, the only evidence-based approach to teaching social skills to adolescents with ASD
•Contains best practices for working with parents, which is the key to helping kids learn social skills
•The authors discuss the pros and cons of teaching students with ASD in educational settings like full inclusion (good for academics but bad for social skills) and pull-out special day classes (where the reverse is true)
Provides a much-needed book for teachers at all levels for helping students develop the skills they need to be successful.

Jed Baker's long-awaited, much anticipated "how-to" manual is based on his enormously successful social skills training groups. The book covers everything from assessment and strategies for social skills training, to generalization of those skills, to behavior management, to the often-overlooked importance of promoting peer acceptance through sensitivity training. The core of this book, however, is the inclusion of individual skill lessons and activities (seventy in all) that address practically every social situation you can possibly think of. This book is a MUST-READ and should be part of every parent and professional's AS resource library!"
--Lori Shery, president and cofounder, Asperger Syndrome Education Network (ASPEN®)
"This very user-friendly book provides a wealth of ready-to-use activities for both parents and educators.. The centerpiece of the book is a series of 70 specific skills found to cause problems for individuals with autism spectrum and other social-communication disorders. Each skill is presented in a handy format, with the skill to be learned on one page and related activities on the facing page. The last chapter on sensitivity and awareness training makes this a complete social skills training package."
--Diane Adreon, assoc dir., Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, University of Miami
"Dr. Baker's clinical expertise and personal concern for individuals with Asperger Syndrome is evident throughout this wonderful book. The chapters contain many easy-to-use strategies to make and keep friends, specific examples for various age groups, and clear direction for assessment and intervention. This book is an essential resource for professionals who want to increase all students' social and coping skills within individual and group sessions and in everyday life."

Et surtout, as-tu envie de développer des trucs pour mieux t’entendre avec les autres ? Pour t’aider à résoudre tes conflits ? Super Skills: A Social Skills Group Program for Children with Asperger Syndrome, High-Functioning Autism and Related Challenges is SUPER at many levels. Based on a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the unique characteristics of individuals with ASD, Judy Coucouvanis presents 30 lessons grouped under four types of skills necessary for social success: fundamental skills, social initiation skills, getting along with others, and social response skills. Each lesson is highly
structured and organized, making it easy for even inexperienced teachers and other group leaders to follow and implement successfully. A series of practical checklists and other instruments provide a solid foundation for assessing students' social skills levels and subsequent planning.
"I feel privileged to call Judy Coucouvanis my colleague and friend. We have worked together for more than 15 years serving individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their families. This book is an invaluable guide to parents and professionals who help improve the social skills of children and teens with ASD. The book is clear, concise, practical, easy-to-read, and easy-to-use. The book is written after many years of clinical practice and successful results. It is written for practitioners who are interested in helping children and teens with ASD to develop social skills and to make a difference in their lives. This is a book to be read and practiced time and time again as children grow, change, and need higher levels of social skills. This much-needed book is a true gem."

It is challenging for many individuals with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HF-ASD), children and adults alike. For this reasons, it is essential to equip individuals with ASD with effective conversational skills.
The Conversation Framework is a unique strategy that provides an approach to effectively assessing and teaching conversation skills in a group setting. The overall goal is to provide concrete steps for teaching conversation that promote retention of skills and natural conversation in a wide range of settings with a variety of people. The framework was developed and refined over many years based on a review of relevant research and close observations of how people speak to each other.
Many teachers find it difficult to teach communication skills, but the Conversation Framework provides a simple and easy-to-implement process for teaching effective conversational habits. The rules presented in this book are specific enough to equip an individual with HF-ASD with the tools necessary to acquire conversation skills, yet simple enough to be used at any age. If you're looking for a comprehensive,.model with assessments, data collection, visual supports, drills, and prompt examples, this is your book ! Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : HAB-A HAB-A - Habiletés Sociales - Méthodes et Programmes Résumé : During adolescence social development and social status among peers is of crucial importance. For teenagers with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) social interaction does not come naturally and often needs to be carefully learned. Using a restaurant menu as a template, The Social and Life Skills MeNu guides readers through each step of a conversation with starter statements to initiate conversation, main course topics to convey the purpose of the interaction, and treats that bring the exchange to a close. Packed with questionnaires, discussion logs and hypothetical social scenarios, this workbook encourages students to think through their responses and consider the consequences of what they say and how others might react. By practicing these easy techniques students can improve self-awareness, increase self-confidence and build on their daily life skills.

Written for mainstream and special needs teachers, speech & language therapists, drama teachers and dramatherapists, the book shows how using drama with children across the autism spectrum can help to develop: · Social skills · Playfulness and pretence · Verbal and non-verbal communication · Self-awareness and self-esteem. Taking a developmental approach, the book is divided into two parts: Simple child-focused activities (Units 1-2) for children in a special school setting who are at an early stage of engagement; and Group-orientated activities (Units 3-9) for use in inclusive settings where mixed groups of children, with and without autism, can work together to develop personal and social skills. Each unit focuses on one skill area at a time and follows a similar format which includes a brief theoretical background, a clear set of aims, an assessment profile and a set of drama activities to develop the focus skill. Complete with case studies, photocopiable resources and step-by-step guidance on how to deliver a drama programme, this practical resource will be invaluable for all those who are looking for new ways of engaging children on the autism spectrum.
