First, while the individual with ASD is central, the motivations of others, such as parents, are often taken as the motivations of the individual. Second, the desirable cross-disciplinary pollination for improved intervention can often face difficulties due to a lack of a common language among disciplines. Thirdly, the literature often lacks enough information to allow a clear understanding of the targeted contexts and goals not enabling an assessment of outcomes and building on past advances. To tackle these challenges, we propose that families of Personas and scenarios are used throughout the design and development process, and as dissemination resources, and provide illustrative examples. The aim of this study was to examine predictors (e.g., the theory of planned behavior, [TPB]) of providing family-centered care (FCC) services to youth with ASD in pediatric professionals from a range of disciplines. A multidisciplinary (e.g., medicine, psychology, education, etc.) sample of professionals (N = 709) who endorsed providing services to youth with ASD in the United States was recruited from online provider listings, listservs, etc. Hierarchical multiple regressions examined the relationship of demographic and TPB predictors to professionals' self-reported FCC practices. Professionals reported a high degree of using FCC in their practice with youth with ASD. Attitudes and perceived behavioral control predicted self-reported FCC practices, while subjective norms did not. Experienced practitioners reported using FCC practices in spite of not having necessarily received FCC training. Discipline differences were evident in rates of reported FCC. The Theory of Planned Behavior is helpful in understanding FCC practices and attention should be given to training professionals in FCC as they work with youth with ASD. Method Social workers (N = 229, M = 13.97 years of experience, SD = 8.59) completed the ASD Knowledge and Self-Efficacy Questionnaire and a demographic and professional background questionnaire. Results Participants displayed a fair level of knowledge regarding ASD etiology and interventions and a low rate of lack of ASD knowledge. Social workers who worked in multidisciplinary settings showed significantly broader knowledge of ASD?s early clinical signs and diagnostic criteria and declared less lack of knowledge than those from welfare agencies. Using multiple regression analysis, self-efficacy was positively predicted by professional and knowledge parameters. The model explained 47.1% of the variance. Conclusions A multidisciplinary setting enhances social workers' theoretical and practical ASD knowledge, enabling them to face detection and intervention challenges. An in-depth understanding of knowledge gaps will assist in planning specialized training for social workers and promoting their self-efficacy in assessing and supporting children with ASD and their families. The collected data includes social-demographic characteristics, standardized behavioral testing, detailed clinical history from electronic patient records, genetic samples, and various neurological measures. We describe the initial cohort characteristics following the first 18 months of data collection (188 children with autism). We believe that the Negev HUB autism database offers a unique and valuable resource for studying the heterogeneity of autism etiologies across different ethnic populations.
