1. Almahmoud OH, Abushaikha L. Prevalence and risk factors of developmental disabilities among preschool children in the Arab world: a narrative literature review. Child health nursing research. 2023; 29(2): 101-10.

PURPOSE: Developmental disabilities (DDs) are a global childhood problem whose prevalence is rising, with a disproportionate impact on individuals in low-and middle-income countries. However, data on the prevalence of DDs in the Arab world are limited. This review highlights what is currently known about the prevalence and risk factors of DDs in preschool children in the Arab world. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, CINAHL, Science Direct, and Google Scholar were searched for publications on DDs among preschool children in the Arab world. Only 14 studies were identified in the literature, from 12 Arab countries. RESULTS: The overall estimated prevalence of DDs among preschool children in the Arab world is 27.5%. An analysis of risk factors for DDs showed that child-related, maternal, and family-related factors account for a significant cumulative risk of developing DDs in preschool children. Maternal factors, such as antenatal and perinatal complications, were the most common risk factors. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of DDs among preschoolers is significantly high in the Arab world, which emphasizes the importance of the early detection and diagnosis of DD, as well as its associated risk factors.

2. Alsaedi RH, Carrington S, Watters JJ. Caregivers’ Assessment of the Sensory Processing Patterns Exhibited by Children with Autism in the Gulf Region. Journal of autism and developmental disorders. 2023.

This study explored the nature, prevalence, and developmental profiles of sensory processing disorders among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The participants comprised 119 children with ASD and 30 typically developing children and their parents. The Child Sensory Profile-2 was used to assess the children’s sensory processing characteristics. The children with ASD exhibited elevated sensory processing difficulties. Deficits were observed in all the sensory modalities among the children with ASD, except the visual processing modality. Age-related improvements were observed in most sensory processing domains, although non-significant differences were noted in three domains. These findings should enhance understanding of the sensory challenges faced by children with ASD and contribute to the development of individually tailored, targeted, and age-specific therapeutic interventions.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder caused by both environmental and genetic factors. However, its etiology and pathogenesis remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to establish an immune-related diagnostic model for ASD using bioinformatics methods and to identify ASD biomarkers. Two ASD datasets, GSE18123 and GSE29691, were integrated into the gene expression Database to eliminate batch effects. 41 differentially expressed genes were identified by microarray data linear model (limma package). Based on the results of the immune infiltration analysis, we speculated that neutrophils, B cells naive, CD8+ T cells, and Tregs are potential core immune cells in ASD and participate in the occurrence of ASD. Finally, the differential genes and immune infiltration in ASD and non-ASD patients were compared, and the most relevant genes were selected to construct the first immune correlation prediction model of ASD. After the calculation, the model exhibited better accuracy. The calculations show that the model has good accuracy.

4. Castellón FA, Sturm A, Kasari C. Dual Identification: Trajectories to English Proficiency for English Learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Journal of autism and developmental disorders. 2023.

BACKGROUND: There are an increasing number of English Learners (EL) served in schools, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, little is known about students who receive school-based services as EL and under autism eligibility. PURPOSE & METHODS: The present study aimed to examine the sociodemographic characteristics, time to English Language Proficient status by survival analysis, and predictors of English fluency utilizing a logistic regression for dually identified EL and autism eligible students in a large urban school district during the 2011-2019 academic school years. RESULTS: Overall, dually identified students (N = 849) educated in segregated settings (N = 372) became English proficient at lower rates and at older ages than students included in general education (N = 477). CONCLUSION: Students placed in segregated special education classrooms were significantly less likely to achieve English Language Proficient classification. The present study begins to illustrate the time to English proficiency of dually identified students and the potential impact it has on their educational opportunities.

5. Davy G, Barbaro J, Unwin K, Dissanayake C. Leisure, Employment, Community Participation, and Quality of Life in Primary Caregivers of Autistic Children: A Qualitative Study. Journal of autism and developmental disorders. 2023.

PURPOSE: In prioritising the needs of their autistic children, parents often modify their own participation across leisure, social, and workforce activities. Few studies have examined the impact these modifications have on caregiver quality of life (QoL). The aim in the current study was to examine how parenting their autistic child/ren impacts parent’s participation and QoL. METHODS: Twenty primary caregivers (29-48 years, all female) of autistic children (7-11 years) were interviewed online about their participation in leisure, community, and employment activities including the impact of COVID-19. RESULTS: Five themes with underlying subthemes were identified using reflexive thematic analysis. The themes were: (1) Reflecting on the important things in life, (2) Getting access to everything needed, (3) Barriers to participation in meaningful activities, (4) Facilitators of participation in meaningful activities, and (5) Participation through the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSION: The findings highlight the importance of regular participation in meaningful activities for parents of autistic children and the support needed by them, particularly single parents, to achieve balance between meeting caring responsibilities and their own participation needs.

6. Delehanty A, Hooker JL, Wetherby AM. Verbal Responsiveness in Parents of Toddlers With and Without Autism During a Home Observation. Journal of autism and developmental disorders. 2023.

This study examined patterns of verbal responsiveness in parents of toddlers (M(age) = 20 months) later identified with autism (n = 121), developmental delay (n = 46), or typical development (n = 44) during an hourlong home observation. Parent verbal responsiveness (PVR) was compared using MANOVA across groups and by child expressive language phase. Multiple regression analyses controlling for child age and maternal education were employed to examine the extent to which PVR predicted variance in concurrent child social communication and prospective language skills. Parents provided synchronous responses approximately 90% of the time. Parents of children with autism and developmental delay used smaller proportions of responses that added linguistic information (i.e., expansions and follow-in directives for language) than those of children with typical development. Parents of children in the preverbal phase were more likely, on average, to affirm their children’s acts of intentional communication or provide a follow-in directive for action that did not necessitate a verbal response than to expand or elicit language. Regression results indicated that parental use of expansions and follow-in directives for language made significant contributions to child language outcomes. The patterns we observed may reflect parents’ attunement to their child’s developmental level. Responsiveness to a child’s focus of attention is vital in the earlier stages of language learning; however, results point to the potential importance of parental expansions and follow-in directives for promoting language development across groups in this sample. Directions for intervention research targeting PVR and language skills in toddlers with autism and developmental delays are discussed.

Impairments in recognition of emotional facial expressions, affective prosody, and multisensory facilitation of response time in high-functioning autism. Frontiers in psychiatry. 2023; 14: 1151665.

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in emotional perception are common in autistic people, but it remains unclear to which extent these perceptual impairments are linked to specific sensory modalities, specific emotions or multisensory facilitation. METHODS: This study aimed to investigate uni- and bimodal perception of emotional cues as well as multisensory facilitation in autistic (n = 18, mean age: 36.72 years, SD: 11.36) compared to non-autistic (n = 18, mean age: 36.41 years, SD: 12.18) people using auditory, visual and audiovisual stimuli. RESULTS: Lower identification accuracy and longer response time were revealed in high-functioning autistic people. These differences were independent of modality and emotion and showed large effect sizes (Cohen’s d 0.8-1.2). Furthermore, multisensory facilitation of response time was observed in non-autistic people that was absent in autistic people, whereas no differences were found in multisensory facilitation of accuracy between the two groups. DISCUSSION: These findings suggest that processing of auditory and visual components of audiovisual stimuli is carried out more separately in autistic individuals (with equivalent temporal demands required for processing of the respective unimodal cues), but still with similar relative improvement in accuracy, whereas earlier integrative multimodal merging of stimulus properties seems to occur in non-autistic individuals.

8. Kiep M, Spek A, Ceulemans E, Noens I. Sensory Processing and Executive Functioning in Autistic Adults. Journal of autism and developmental disorders. 2023.

PURPOSE: One of the core features that can be experienced by adults on the autism spectrum is hyper- and hyporeactivity to sensory stimuli. Research suggests that executive functioning (EF) impairments are related to sensory issues. In this study the relationship between sensory processing issues and EF was investigated. We expected sensory processing issues to predict EF impairments. METHODS: Thirty men and 30 women on the autism spectrum, 20 men and 24 women without autism were included and matched on intelligence and age. Group comparisons were conducted to determine if groups differed regarding self-reported sensory processing issues (GSQ-NL) and self-reports on EF (BRIEF-A). Correlational and regression analyses were carried out to investigate the relationship between self-reports on GSQ-NL and BRIEF-A. RESULTS: We found significant differences between men and women on the spectrum with regard to sensory processing issues and EF. Hyporeactivity to sensory information explained most of the EF problems. CONCLUSION: Clinicians should be aware of differences in sensory experiences between adults on the spectrum and non-autistic adults and differences between men and women during assessment and subsequent counselling.

9. Lampi AJ, Brewer R, Bird G, Jaswal VK. Non-autistic adults can recognize posed autistic facial expressions: Implications for internal representations of emotion. Autism research : official journal of the International Society for Autism Research. 2023.

Autistic people report that their emotional expressions are sometimes misunderstood by non-autistic people. One explanation for these misunderstandings could be that the two neurotypes have different internal representations of emotion: Perhaps they have different expectations about what a facial expression showing a particular emotion looks like. In three well-powered studies with non-autistic college students in the United States (total N = 632), we investigated this possibility. In Study 1, participants recognized most facial expressions posed by autistic individuals more accurately than those posed by non-autistic individuals. Study 2 showed that one reason the autistic expressions were recognized more accurately was because they were better and more intense examples of the intended expressions than the non-autistic expressions. In Study 3, we used a set of expressions created by autistic and non-autistic individuals who could see their faces as they made the expressions, which could allow them to explicitly match the expression they produced with their internal representation of that emotional expression. Here, neither autistic expressions nor non-autistic expressions were consistently recognized more accurately. In short, these findings suggest that differences in internal representations of what emotional expressions look like are unlikely to play a major role in explaining why non-autistic people sometimes misunderstand the emotions autistic people are experiencing.

10. Liu L, Fu Q, Ding H, Jiang H, Zhan Z, Lai Y. Combination of machine learning-based bulk and single-cell genomics reveals necroptosis-related molecular subtypes and immunological features in autism spectrum disorder. Frontiers in immunology. 2023; 14: 1139420.

BACKGROUND: Necroptosis is a novel form of controlled cell death that contributes to the progression of various illnesses. Nonetheless, the function and significance of necroptosis in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) remain unknown and require further investigation. METHODS: We utilized single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) data to assess the expression patterns of necroptosis in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) based on 159 necroptosis-related genes. We identified differentially expressed NRGs and used an unsupervised clustering approach to divide ASD children into distinct molecular subgroups. We also evaluated immunological infiltrations and immune checkpoints using the CIBERSORT algorithm. Characteristic NRGs, identified by the LASSO, RF, and SVM-RFE algorithms, were utilized to construct a risk model. Moreover, functional enrichment, immune infiltration, and CMap analysis were further explored. Additionally, external validation was performed using RT-PCR analysis. RESULTS: Both snRNA-seq and bulk transcriptome data demonstrated a greater necroptosis score in ASD children. Among these cell subtypes, excitatory neurons, inhibitory neurons, and endothelials displayed the highest activity of necroptosis. Children with ASD were categorized into two subtypes of necroptosis, and subtype2 exhibited higher immune activity. Four characteristic NRGs (TICAM1, CASP1, CAPN1, and CHMP4A) identified using three machine learning algorithms could predict the onset of ASD. Nomograms, calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA) based on 3-NRG have been shown to have clinical benefit in children with ASD. Furthermore, necroptosis-based riskScore was found to be positively associated with immune activation. Finally, RT-PCR demonstrated differentially expressed of these four NRGs in human peripheral blood samples. CONCLUSION: A comprehensive identification of necroptosis may shed light on the underlying pathogenic process driving ASD onset. The classification of necroptosis subtypes and construction of a necroptosis-related risk model may yield significant insights for the individualized treatment of children with ASD.

11. Lu M, Liu M, Pang F, Peng T, Liu Y, Wen J. Stumbling Block in Providing Physical Activity Support Among Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Moderated Mediation Analysis. Journal of autism and developmental disorders. 2023.

Physical activity (PA) benefits children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Evidence suggests that some barriers impede parents from providing PA support for their children with ASD. Parental perceived stigma is one of these barriers. However, few studies have explored how parental perceived stigma influences parental PA support. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parental perceived stigma and parental PA support, the mediating role of parental self-efficacy, and the moderating effect of having other typically developing children or not. A total of 274 participants were recruited to participate in the study. The results showed that parental self-efficacy mediated the association between parental perceived stigma and parental PA support and the moderating effect of having other typically developing children or not.

12. Parsons MA. Autism diagnosis in females by eating disorder professionals. Journal of eating disorders. 2023; 11(1): 73.

IMPORTANCE: Autism and eating disorders cooccur at high rates, with autism impacting the efficacy of eating disorder treatments and outcomes. Females are underdiagnosed with autism and diagnosed later in life than their male counterparts. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to define the incidence of eating disorder professionals identifying autism in female adolescents and young adults engaged in treatment for an eating disorder. DESIGN: The research design is a cross-sectional retrospective records review. The charts reviewed were from the medical records of forty assigned-at-birth females between the ages of 13-25 who received treatment for an eating disorder at the partial hospitalization program (PHP) level of care between 2020 and 2022. MAIN OUTCOMES: Upon entering PHP for an eating disorder, 10% of the study participants had a pre-existing diagnosis of autism. A total of 27.5% of participants had clinical suspicion of autism. The number of autism traits that an individual possessed directly correlated with the number of calendar days in treatment. CONCLUSION: Eating disorder professionals in this study identified autism in 17.5% of adolescent and young adult females who entered PHP treatment for an eating disorder who had not previously been diagnosed with autism. Eating disorder professionals can anticipate that individuals with autism may be in treatment for a longer duration. Further studies should explore effective treatment measures for those with autism in treatment for an eating disorder. It is well established that autism and eating disorders often co-occur. Females are less likely to be diagnosed with autism and tend to receive a diagnosis later in life than males. Therefore, during eating disorder treatment at higher levels of care, eating disorder professionals may be the first to recognize autism in their female patients. A review of chart records from female teens and young adults receiving eating disorder treatment at the partial hospitalization level of care between 2020–2022, revealed that 10% had a diagnosis of autism upon entering treatment and an additional 17.5% received a new diagnosis during treatment. The number of autism traits present in an individual directly correlated to longer treatment durations. eng.

13. Ros-DeMarize R, Boan A, Bradley C, Klein J, Carpenter L. Tele-PCIT: Initial Examination of Internet Delivered PCIT for Young Children with Autism. Child psychiatry and human development. 2023.

PURPOSE: Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an empirically supported behavioral parenting program for disruptive behavior and has been shown to also be effective for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Telehealth delivery of PCIT (Tele-PCIT) is also supported, but no trials have focused on children with ASD. The purpose of the study was to examine the initial efficacy of a time limited version of Tele-PCIT within an ASD sample. METHODS: Participants included parents of 20 children (ages 2-6) with ASD who received 10 sessions of Tele-PCIT. Parents reported on their parenting stress, parenting practices, and child behavior. A play observation was coded for parent use of treatment skills and for child compliance. RESULTS: 80% of participants completed treatment (n = 16) and results revealed significant improvements across parenting and child outcomes. Parents reported decreases in parenting stress from pre-to-post-treatment, which were maintained at a 3-month follow-up, along with decreases in negative parenting practices (i.e., Laxness and Overactivity) from pre-to-post treatment that were also maintained at follow-up. Significant increases in parent use of positive parenting skills (i.e., « Do » Skills) during child-led play and decreases in negative parenting skills (i.e., « Don’t » Skills) were observed. Results also revealed significant reductions in parent rated child externalizing behavior problems from pre-to-post-treatment that were also maintained at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Results of the current study support the initial efficacy of Tele-PCIT for treating disruptive behavior in young children with ASD. Findings from this pilot will inform larger examinations of Tele-PCIT for youth with ASD.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication and repetitive behavior. Many studies show that the number of cognitive impairmentscan be reduced by antagonists of the histamine H3 receptor (H3R). In this study, the effects of ciproxifan (CPX) (1 and 3 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) on cognitive impairments in rat pups exposed to valproic acid (VPA) (600 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) wereexamined on postnatal day 48-50 (PND 48-50) using marble-burying task (MBT), open field, novel object recognition (NOR), and Passive avoidance tasks. Famotidine (FAM) (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) was also used to determine whether histaminergic neurotransmission exerts its procognitive effects via H2 receptors (H2Rs). Furthermore, a histological investigation was conducted to assess the degree of degeneration of hippocampal neurons. The results revealed that repetitive behaviors increased in VPA-exposed rat offspring in the MBT. In addition, VPA-exposed rat offspring exhibited more anxiety-like behaviors in the open field than saline-treated rats. It was found that VPA-exposed rat offspring showed memory deficits in NOR and Passive avoidance tasks. Our results indicated that 3 mg/kg CPX improved cognitive impairments induced by VPA, while 20 mg/kg FAM attenuated them. We concluded that 3 mg/kg CPX improved VPA-induced cognitive impairments through H3Rs. The histological assessment showed that the number of CA1 neurons decreased in the VPA-exposed rat offspring compared to the saline-exposed rat offspring, but this decrease was not significant. The histological assessment also revealed no significant differences in CA1 neurons in VPA-exposed rat offspring compared to saline-exposed rat offspring. However, CPX3 increased the number of CA1 neurons in the VPA + CPX3 group compared to the VPA + Saline group, but this increase was not significant. This study showed that rats prenatally exposed to VPA exhibit cognitive impairments in the MBT, open field, NOR, and Passive avoidance tests, which are ameliorated by CPX treatment on PND 48-50. In addition, morphological investigations showed that VPA treatment did not lead to neuronal degeneration in the CA1 subfield of the hippocampus in rat pups.

15. Vi L, Jiwa MI, Lunsky Y, Thakur A. A systematic review of intellectual and developmental disability curriculum in international pre-graduate health professional education. BMC medical education. 2023; 23(1): 329.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing global population of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), this population remains especially vulnerable to health disparities through several factors such as a lack of access to sufficient medical care and poor determinants of health. To add, numerous studies have shown that healthcare professionals are still insufficiently prepared to support this population of patients. This review synthesizes the literature on current pre-graduate IDD training programs across healthcare professions with the goal of informing the creation of evidence-based curricula. METHODS: Four major databases were searched for current pre-graduate IDD training interventions for healthcare professionals. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis flow diagram and the Best Evidence Medical Educations systematic review guide were used to frame our collection and analysis. RESULTS: Of the 8601 studies screened, 32 studies were identified, with most studies involving medical students (50%). Of note, 35% of studies were interprofessional. Most interventions utilized multiple pedagogical methods with a majority including clinical experiences (63%) followed by theoretical teaching (59%). Kirkpatrick levels showed 9% were level 0, 6% were level 1, 31% were level 2A, 31% were level 2B, 19% were level 3, 3% were level 4A, and none were level 4B. CONCLUSIONS: There is a paucity of formally evaluated studies in pre-graduate health professional IDD education. As well, there are a lack of longitudinal learning opportunities and integration into formal curriculum. Strengths identified were the use of multimodal approaches to teaching, including interprofessional approaches to optimize team competencies.

16. Zhao Q, Luo Y, Mei X, Shao Z. Resting-state EEG patterns of preschool-aged boys with autism spectrum disorder: A pilot study. Applied neuropsychology Child. 2023: 1-8.

Defective cognition development during preschool years is believed to be linked with core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Neurophysiological research on mechanisms underly the cognitive disabilities of preschool-aged children with ASD is scarce currently. This pilot study aimed to compare the resting spectral EEG power of preschool-aged boys with ASD with their matched typically developing peers. Children in the ASD group demonstrated reduced central and posterior absolute delta (1-4 Hz) and enhanced frontal absolute beta (12-30 Hz) and gamma (30-45 Hz). The relative power of the ASD group was elevated in delta, theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-12 Hz), beta, and gamma bands as compared to the controls. The theta/beta ratio decreased in the frontal regions and enhanced at Cz and Pz electrodes in the ASD group. Correlations between the inhibition and metacognition indices of the behavior rating inventory of executive function-preschool version (BRIEF-P) and the theta/beta ratio for children of both groups were significant. In conclusion, the present study revealed atypical resting spectral characteristics of boys with ASD at preschool ages. Future large-sampled studies for the generalization of our findings and a better understanding of the relationships between brain oscillations and phenotypes of ASD are warranted.
