Autistic adults experience difficulties finding and keeping employment. However, research investigating reasons that might explain this difficulty produce mixed results. We gave a survey to 2449 autistic adults and used a statistic method to group them based on their employment status over 8 years. We identified four employment groups that best captured the experiences of autistic adults; this included a group that experienced stable unemployment, a group that experienced stable employment, a group that had high employment that reduced over time, and a group whose employment increased over the 8 years. Further analysis showed that those with fewer autistic traits, younger age, male gender, higher education, later diagnosis age and no co-occurring conditions were more likely to have stable employment. People whose employment changed over time were more likely to have a higher level of education than the stable unemployment group, and those in the increasing employment group were younger age and had no co-occurring conditions. These findings help us better understand that not all autistic adults’ experiences of employment are the same, which helps focus where employment programmes and support may be most needed, for example, people who identify as women or have a co-occurring condition.

Executive dysfunction is a prevalent issue in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While the efficacy of physical exercise in enhancing cognitive abilities in these children is well-documented, research exploring the relationship between physical exercise and brain function remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the impact of cognitively stimulating exercise on executive functions (EF) in children with ASD. The study enrolled thirty children with ASD who were randomly allocated into two groups: a sports game learning group (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15). Functional near-infrared spectroscopy was utilized to monitor cerebral function alterations pre- and post- an eight-week intervention program. The study focused on three core components of executive function: working memory, inhibitory control (IC), and cognitive flexibility (CF). Results revealed a significant improvement in the EF in the intervention group. After eight weeks of intervention, neural activity, along with improved EF performance, was enhanced significantly in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). During post-intervention, EF tasks were also significantly activated in the dorsolateral PFC, orbitofrontal cortex, and frontal pole area. Furthermore, an increase in short-distance functional connectivity within the PFC was observed during resting states. These results imply that engagement in sports game training can significantly improve EF information processing, augmenting task-related cortical activations and the efficiency of brain function networks in children with ASD.

The core clinical characteristics of autism, which is a neurodevelopmental disease, involve repetitive behavior and impaired social interactions. Studies have shown that the Notch and Neuregulin1 (NRG1) signaling pathways are abnormally activated in autism, but the mechanism by which these two signaling pathways interact to contribute to the progression of autism has not been determined. Our results suggest that the levels of Notch1, Hes1, NRG1, and phosphorylated ErbB4 in the cerebellum (CB), hippocampus (HC), and prefrontal cortex (PFC) were increased in rats with valproic acid (VPA)-induced autism compared to those in the Con group. However, 3, 5-difluorophenyl-L-alanyl-L-2-phenylglycine tert-butyl (DAPT), which is a Notch pathway inhibitor, ameliorated autism-like behavioral abnormalities and decreased the protein levels of NRG1 and phosphorylated ErbB4 in rats with VPA-induced autism; these results demonstrated that the Notch1/Hes1 pathway could participate in the pathogenesis of autism by regulating the NRG1/ErbB4 signaling pathway. Studies have shown that the Notch pathway regulates microglial differentiation and activation during the onset of neurological disorders and that microglia affect autism-like behavior via synaptic pruning. Therefore, we hypothesized that the Notch1/Hes1 pathway could regulate the NRG1/ErbB4 pathway and thus participate in the development of autism by regulating microglial functions. The present study showed that AG1478, which is an ErbB4 inhibitor, ameliorated the autism-like behaviors in a VPA-induced autism rat model, reduced abnormal microglial activation, and decreased NRG1 and Iba-1 colocalization; however, AG1478 did not alter Notch1/Hes1 activity. These results demonstrated that Notch1/Hes1 may participate in the microglial activation in autism by regulating NRG1/ErbB4, revealing a new mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of autism.

Telemedicine utilization of people with an Intellectual or Other Developmental Disability (IDD) during the COVID-19 Pandemic is not well known. This study compares telemedicine utilization of those with and without IDD prior to the pandemic to after it began. Using the Utah All Payers Claims Database from 2019 to 2021, the study identified telemedicine utilization of adults aged 18 to 62 years old in 2019. Propensity score matching was used to minimize observed confounders of subjects with and without IDD in 2019. Negative binomial regression was used to identify factors that were associated with telemedicine utilization. The final number of subjects in the analysis was 18 204 (IDD: n = 6068, non-IDD: n = 12 136 based on 1:2 propensity score matching). The average (SD) age of the subjects was 31 (11.3) years old in 2019. Forty percent of the subjects were female, about 70% of subjects were covered by Medicaid in 2019. Average (SD) number of telemedicine use in 2020 (IDD: 1.96 (5.97), non-IDD: 1.18 (4.90); P < .01) and 2021 (IDD: 2.24 (6.78) vs 1.37 (5.13); P < .01) were higher for the IDD group than the non-IDD group. The regression results showed that the subjects with IDD had 56% more telemedicine encounters than those in the non-IDD group (Incidence Rate Ratio (IRR) = 1.56, P < .01). The growth of telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to reduce persistent healthcare disparities in individuals with IDD. However, quality of telemedicine should be considered when it is provided to improve health of subjects with IDD.

Autism spectrum disorder is discussed in the context of altered neural oscillations and imbalanced cortical excitation-inhibition of cortical origin. We studied here whether developmental changes in peripheral auditory processing, while preserving basic hearing function, lead to altered cortical oscillations. Local field potentials (LFPs) were recorded from auditory, visual, and prefrontal cortices and the hippocampus of Bdnf(Pax2) KO mice. These mice develop an autism-like behavioral phenotype through deletion of BDNF in Pax2+ interneuron precursors, affecting lower brainstem functions, but not frontal brain regions directly. Evoked LFP responses to behaviorally relevant auditory stimuli were weaker in the auditory cortex of Bdnf(Pax2) KOs, connected to maturation deficits of high-spontaneous rate auditory nerve fibers. This was correlated with enhanced spontaneous and induced LFP power, excitation-inhibition imbalance, and dendritic spine immaturity, mirroring autistic phenotypes. Thus, impairments in peripheral high-spontaneous rate fibers alter spike synchrony and subsequently cortical processing relevant for normal communication and behavior.

This study investigates mothers’ and siblings’ perspectives regarding similarities and differences in siblingships with and without autism. Twenty-nine typical children (M(age) = 8.78 years, SD = 2.05) whose younger siblings have a diagnosis of autism and their mothers constituted the ‘autism group.’ Forty-six typical children (M(age) = 9.12 years, SD = 2.06) with younger typical siblings and their mothers constituted the ‘typical group’. Children and mothers completed the Sibling Relationship Questionnaires and were interviewed. Children’s reports illustrated similarities in sibling relationships across groups, with no between-group differences in overall warmth, conflict, rivalry, or relative power in the sibling relationship. Mothers of autistic children reported their children to have less warmth and closeness (F((1,72)) = 5.63, p = .02, η(2) = .073) and less conflict (F((1,72)) = 6.66, p = .012, η(2) = .085) with their siblings than mothers of typical children. More disagreement was found between mothers and children in the autism group than in the typical group. Mothers and children reported less intimacy and less quarreling between the siblings in the autism group than in the typical group. The qualitative analysis suggests that siblings focused on the present experience, while mothers also referred to processes in the sibling relationship. Interviewees in the autism group referred to various specificities in the siblingships without explicitly using the term « autism ». The findings highlight a typical-like experience for siblings of autistic children. At the same time, mothers’ perspectives emphasize differences and challenges in siblingships, reporting a pattern of decreased involvement. It is important to consider both perspectives in research and clinical work with families of autistic children.

Eating behavior, which includes eating habits and preferences, frequency of eating, and other features related to diet, is a major characteristic not only of a person’s nutritional status, but also of health in general. In recent years, the prevalence of eating disorders in children has tended to increase; they also require cross-system approaches in diagnosis by a variety of specialists and correction requires appropriate selection of optimal methods. Maladaptive eating attitudes formed at an early age can contribute to the formation of eating disorders, which can lead to or worsen various neuropsychiatric diseases, digestive diseases, and other related conditions. In children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), eating disorders often appear earlier than other major symptoms of the condition. However, the clinical manifestations of eating disorders in children with ASD are varied and differ in severity and duration, whereas these disorders in neurotypical children might present as short-lived and may not lead to serious consequences. Nevertheless, cases of progressive eating disorders accompanied by a child presenting as under- or overweight and/or with macronutrient and micronutrient deficiencies cannot be excluded. Given the high prevalence of eating disorders in children, many researchers have highlighted the lack of a valid and universally accepted instruments to assess atypical eating behaviors in this population. Therefore, in this review, we wanted to highlight the problems and causes of eating disorders in children, and also to analyze the existing approaches to the validation of these problems, taking into account the existing behavioral features in children with ASD.
