PURPOSE: The study purpose was to examine the effect of emotional support on the overall mental health and stress for caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective study using secondary data from the 2016-2019 National Survey of Children’s Health was conducted using single variable and multivariable linear regression analyses. RESULTS: More informal emotional support sources were associated with better overall mental health (β = 0.124, SE = 0.015, p < .001) and reduced stress (β = -0.261, SE = 0.039, p < .001) for caregivers of children with ASD, controlling for covariates. The number of formal emotional support sources was not significantly associated with caregiver overall mental health or stress when controlling for covariates. Increased amounts of total emotional support sources were significantly associated with increased overall mental health (β = 0.042, SE = 0.010, p < .001) and reduced stress (β = -0.093, SE = 0.024, p < .001) for caregivers. Other factors significantly associated with caregiver outcomes included caregiver sex, caregiver marital status, caregiver education level, economic hardship, child sex, child race/ethnicity, ASD severity, and child receipt of ASD treatment. CONCLUSION: More emotional support sources, in particular informal support sources, may be a protective factor for well-being for caregivers of children with ASD. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Health care providers should evaluate the impact of their formal support services on caregivers of children with ASD and advocate for increased informal and formal support resources for these caregivers.

2. Kurt O, Cevher Z, Kutlu M. Effectiveness of video modeling in teaching earthquake and postearthquake evacuation safety skills for children with autism. J Appl Behav Anal;2024 (Jan 21)

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of video modeling to teach safety skills during earthquakes and postearthquake evacuation to children with autism. Three male children with autism, aged 9-10 years, participated in the study. The results indicate that video modeling was effective at promoting the acquisition of « drop, cover, and hold on » and evacuation skills for all three students. Furthermore, the skills generalized to a new setting for all three participants and maintained up to 4 weeks after video modeling for the two participants for whom maintenance was evaluated. Social-validity data were also collected from participants, their parents, and a teacher, and the findings were positive overall. Implications for instruction and future research are discussed based on the results of the study.

3. Lee JD, Kang VY, Terol AK, Joo S. Examining the Efficacy of Culturally Responsive Interventions for Autistic Children and Their Families: A Meta-Analysis. J Autism Dev Disord;2024 (Jan 21)

Culturally responsive interventions for autistic children and their families have been developed and implemented to address issues related to limited representation, inequities, and disparities in access to care of minoritized families in research. Currently available reviews are relatively limited in scope or do not synthesize interventions specifically. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to synthesize autism intervention literature that specifically targeted autistic individuals and their family members from minoritized backgrounds, such as immigrant families. We used four databases to identify studies that used culturally responsive interventions with minoritized autistic children and their families. An article was included if it included empirical intervention data using an experimental design. A total of 354 studies were initially screened, and 24 studies were included. Effect sizes of these studies were extracted across two levels (i.e., child and family levels). Data from group design studies were extracted manually, and data from single-case design studies were extracted using a web-based tool. We used design-comparable standardized effect sizes to compare across both designs. The analysis revealed a large, positive, and significant overall effect size across culturally responsive interventions. Specifically, social-communication and mental health outcomes yielded significant effects at the child level. Additionally, parents’ mental health and fidelity of strategy implementation also yielded significant results. Our results suggest that culturally responsive interventions yield comparable outcomes to unadapted, original interventions. Future research should examine the distinction between the effect of cultural adaptation and the efficacy of the intervention itself.

Increased risks associated with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) combined with previous reports of heightened vaccine hesitancy among parents of children with ASD indicate the need for a better understanding of attitudes and behaviors related to COVID-19 vaccines among the ASD community. This study is the first to our knowledge to use a mixed-methods approach to understand attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines among parents of children with ASD and autistic adults. Participants were 135 members of the ASD community residing in the state of Arizona (99 parents of children with ASD and 36 autistic adults) who responded to the third (Spring 2021) and fourth (Summer 2021) time points of a larger longitudinal online survey. Quantitative findings indicated that autistic adults had slightly more favorable attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines than parents, and attitudes in both subsamples became more positive over time. However, both parents and autistic adults reported COVID-19 vaccine uptake that was consistent with or better than the general population at both time points. Thematic analysis of responses to open-ended questions identified five themes that characterized factors that contributed to participants’ decisions about COVID-19 vaccinations, including: (1) Desiring a Return to Normalcy, (2) Protection of Self and Others, (3) Previous Experience with COVID-19 (4) Science and Medical Professionals,and (5) Skepticism Regarding Safety, Effectiveness, and Need. Current findings combined with emerging literature paint a relatively optimistic picture about COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in the ASD community.

5. Rum Y, Zachor DA, Armony Y, Daniel E, Dromi E. Sibling Relationships in Families of Autistic and Typical Children: Similarities and Differences in the Perspectives of Siblings and Mothers. J Autism Dev Disord;2024 (Jan 20)

This study investigates mothers’ and siblings’ perspectives regarding similarities and differences in siblingships with and without autism. Twenty-nine typical children (M(age) = 8.78 years, SD = 2.05) whose younger siblings have a diagnosis of autism and their mothers constituted the ‘autism group.’ Forty-six typical children (M(age) = 9.12 years, SD = 2.06) with younger typical siblings and their mothers constituted the ‘typical group’. Children and mothers completed the Sibling Relationship Questionnaires and were interviewed. Children’s reports illustrated similarities in sibling relationships across groups, with no between-group differences in overall warmth, conflict, rivalry, or relative power in the sibling relationship. Mothers of autistic children reported their children to have less warmth and closeness (F((1,72)) = 5.63, p = .02, η(2) = .073) and less conflict (F((1,72)) = 6.66, p = .012, η(2) = .085) with their siblings than mothers of typical children. More disagreement was found between mothers and children in the autism group than in the typical group. Mothers and children reported less intimacy and less quarreling between the siblings in the autism group than in the typical group. The qualitative analysis suggests that siblings focused on the present experience, while mothers also referred to processes in the sibling relationship. Interviewees in the autism group referred to various specificities in the siblingships without explicitly using the term « autism ». The findings highlight a typical-like experience for siblings of autistic children. At the same time, mothers’ perspectives emphasize differences and challenges in siblingships, reporting a pattern of decreased involvement. It is important to consider both perspectives in research and clinical work with families of autistic children.

In present study, we investigated the relationship between the pregnancy exposure to monosodium glutamate (MSG) and autism development in male offspring of rats. Pregnant Wistar rats were allocated into five groups. The first group was control group that pregnant animals received normal saline orally from day 1-18 of pregnancy. Group 2, 3 and 4 pregnant rats received different doses (1.5, 5 and 10 g/kg) of MSG by the same way respectively. Group 5 received 500 mg/kg of Valproic acid (VPA) on the 12.5th day of pregnancy. Different behavioral tests including marble burying, self-grooming, and Barnes maze test were performed on offspring. The levels of glutamate and GSH markers were also measured. The results showed that MSG similar to VPA led to induction of autistic anxiety and repetitive behaviors. It could also deteriorate the spatial memory. Besides we found that behavioral symptoms potentiated with increasing the MSG dosage. Similarly, we had an increase in glutamate and a reduction in GSH levels in offspring. Findings indicated that MSG was able to induce autism in offspring of rats in a dose-dependent way. This effect could be through increasing of glutamate and reduction of GSH. Consequently, MSG should be avoided during pregnancy.

7. Vives-Vilarroig J, Ruiz-Bernardo P, García-Gómez A. Effects of Horseback Riding on the Postural Control of Autistic Children: A Multiple Baseline Across-subjects Design. J Autism Dev Disord;2024 (Jan 21)

The aim of this research was to study the effect of a horseback-riding programme on postural control in a group of autistic children (ASD). Nine children aged 9 to 12 years participated in this study through a multiple baseline across subjects design. The whole programme took place over nine months. Participants followed a previously developed specific horseback-riding programme, consisting of 45-minute sessions held twice a week for at least three months. To evaluate postural control, the average velocity of the centre of pressure displacement was measured by means of a posturographic platform. Results indicated that this intervention with horses had a positive effect on the postural control in children with ASDs.

8. Wall CA, Shic F, Will EA, Wang Q, Roberts JE. Similar Gap-Overlap Profiles in Children with Fragile X Syndrome and IQ-Matched Autism. J Autism Dev Disord;2024 (Jan 21)

PURPOSE: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a single-gene disorder characterized by moderate to severe cognitive impairment and a high association with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Atypical visual attention is a feature of FXS, ASD, and ADHD. Thus, studying early attentional patterns in young children with FXS can offer insight into early emerging neurocognitive processes underlying challenges and contribute to our understanding of common and unique features of ASD and ADHD in FXS. METHODS: The present study examined visual attention indexed by the gap-overlap paradigm in children with FXS (n = 39) compared to children with ASD matched on intellectual ability and age (n = 40) and age-matched neurotypical controls (n = 34). The relationship between gap-overlap performance and intellectual ability, ASD, and ADHD across groups was characterized. Saccadic reaction times (RT) were collected across baseline, gap, and overlap conditions. RESULTS: Results indicate no group differences in RT for any conditions. However, RT of the ASD and NT groups became slower throughout the experiment whereas RT of the FXS group did not change, suggesting difficulties in habituation for the FXS group. There was no relationship between RT and intellectual ability, ADHD, or ASD symptoms in the FXS and ASD groups. In the NT group, slower RT was related to elevated ADHD symptoms only. CONCLUSION: Taken together, findings suggest that the social attention differences documented in FXS and ASD may be due to other cognitive factors, such as reward or motivation, rather than oculomotor control of visual attention.
