Titre : Atypical Categorical Perception in Autism: Autonomy of Discrimination? Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Isabelle SOULIERES, Auteur ; Laurent MOTTRON, Auteur ; Daniel SAUMIER, Auteur ; Serge LAROCHELLE, Auteur Année de publication : 2007 Article en page(s) : p.481-490 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Categorization Discrimination Categorical-perception Top-down-processing Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : A diminished top-down influence has been proposed in autism, to account for enhanced performance in low-level perceptual tasks. Applied to perceptual categorization, this hypothesis predicts a diminished influence of category on discrimination. In order to test this hypothesis, we compared categorical perception in 16 individuals with and 16 individuals without high-functioning autism. While participants with and without autism displayed a typical classification curve, there was no facilitation of discrimination near the category boundary in the autism group. The absence of influence of categorical knowledge on discrimination suggests an increased autonomy of low-level perceptual processes in autism, in the form of a reduced top-down influence from categories toward discrimination.

MEILLEUR, Auteur ; Marie-Pier POULIN-LORD, Auteur ; Michelle DAWSON, Auteur ; Isabelle SOULIERES, Auteur Article en page(s) : p.1-10 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : An important minority of school-aged autistic children, often characterized as ‘nonverbal’ or ‘minimally verbal,’ displays little or no spoken language. These children are at risk of being judged ‘low-functioning’ or ‘untestable’ via conventional cognitive testing practices. One neglected avenue for assessing autistic children so situated is to engage current knowledge of autistic cognitive strengths. Our aim was thus to pilot a strength-informed assessment of autistic children whose poor performance on conventional instruments suggests their cognitive potential is very limited. The three groups did not differ in accuracy, but showed different response time profiles. ASP and CTRL participants were fastest on V + S, amenable to both linguistic and nonlinguistic mediation, whereas HFA participants were equally fast on V and V + S, where visuospatial strategies were available, and slowest on S. HFA participants appeared to favor visuospatial over linguistic mediation. The results support the use of linguistic versus visuospatial tasks for characterizing subtypes on the autism spectrum.
