Pain in Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities / Tim F. OBERLANDER
Titre : Pain in Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Tim F. OBERLANDER, Directeur de publication ; Frank J. SYMONS, Directeur de publication ; Ronald G. BARR, Préfacier, etc. Editeur : Baltimore [Etats-Unis] : Brookes Publishing Année de publication : 2006 Importance : 246 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 17,7cm x 25,3cm x 1,2cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-55766-869-1 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : AUT-B AUT-B - L'Autisme - Ouvrages généraux et scientifiques Résumé : For clinicians, recognizing and correctly interpreting any patient’s expression of pain is a challenge — but a necessity for timely and appropriate health care. If that patient has a developmental disability and self-report is unavailable, that challenge is magnified. That’s why every clinician needs this landmark volume. The first to synthesize research about this critical topic, this book will help ensure that healthcare professionals are better prepared to assess and manage pain in children and adults with a range of disabilities. International experts cover quality of life concerns, health care issues, and best practices in pain management for individuals from infancy through adulthood, giving readers up-to-date information on
the functional impact of pain on a person’s quality of life
how pain might instigate or intensify challenging behavior
issues surrounding pharmacological treatment of pain, such as selecting medication, considering adverse interactions with other medications, and monitoring effects
neurobiological and neuropsychological processes involved in pain
current epidemiological research on pain in individuals with disabilities
pain in people with specific developmental disabilities: motor disorders, cognitive impairments, social/emotional impairments, and other neurological disorders
current assessment strategies and technologies
challenges in pharmacological management of pain
the future of pain management in research, policy, and practice
Essential reading for a wide range of professionals across disciplines — including physicians, nurses, psychologists, rehabilitation therapists, direct care staff, and special educators — this research-based book will help professionals deliver the best possible pain management and improve the quality of life for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

- Bruxelles [Belgique] : Autisme Europe, 2009 . - 23 p. ; 21cm x 29,7cm x 0,5cm.

Key areas of theory and research are covered, from classification and diagnosis, genetics, neurology and biochemistry, to socio-cognitive, developmental and educational perspectives, essential to a broader understanding of the autism spectrum. In addition it introduces new emphases on MEG, epilepsy and memory. In highlighting both biomedical and psychological perspectives, this book reflects the multi-level emphasis of contemporary thinking about autism. By addressing key unanswered questions, Researching the Autism Spectrum acts as a guidepost for future research and provides an authoritative and multidisciplinary perspective.

Présentation : ill. Format : 18,5cm x 26cm x 2,7cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-973212-8 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : AUT-B AUT-B - L'Autisme - Ouvrages généraux et scientifiques Résumé : Fully details the many advances that have occurred in the field within the past 10 years since the last edition was published
Combines the separate research done by autism specialists and neuroscientists and blends these two sources, sorting out the relevant findings and characterizing the many remaining unsolved questions
Written by two leading autism experts
The Autisms, written by Mary Coleman and Christopher Gillberg, demonstrates that autism, like mental retardation, is a clinical presentation of numerous different diseases, many with genomic underpinnings. In this ground-breaking work, the authors explain in great detail how to clinically diagnose infants, children, adolescents and adults with autistic behavioral features and their psychiatric and neurological work-ups.
This new edition contains several chapters on the associated problems of autism, such as intellectual disability, epilepsy, tics, eating disorders and sleep problems, as well as a chapter on epidemiology that documents the historical increase in autism diagnoses. Several chapters summarize the latest data on neuroanatomy, biochemistry and neuropsychology, while three neurogenomics chapters show evidence suggesting that autism occurs due to genetic errors which cause interruption or misdirection of critical neurodevelopmental circuits in the fetal brain.
Completely up-to-date, The Autisms is relevant and necessary reading for researchers and clinicians in neuroscience, neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and psychology.
Readership: Pediatricians, psychiatrists, neurologists, and psychologists. Secondary audiences include other professionals who work with autistic children, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, early learning specialists in autism, etc. as well as the graduate programs of neuroscientists currently studying autism. The book is divided into four sections: (1) Developmental, Neurobiological, Genetic, and Family Considerations; (2) Attention and Perception; (3) Cognition, Theory of Mind, and Executive Functioning; and (4) Social and Adaptive Behaviors. With the consideration of this broad range of topics, this volume is both a state-of-the-art resource about autism and a unique contribution to the study of development. It will be of interest to researchers and care providers from several domains, including psychology, psychiatry, social work, developmental psychology, and education. Why this is a true ethical problem is only one of many insights to be gained from Deborah R. Barnbaum's meticulous analysis. Along the way, we confront perhaps the greatest challenge—what would it actually be like for us to get inside the heads of persons with autism, and experience life as they do?"
Howard Brody, MD, PhD, Director, Institute for the Medical Humanities, University of Texas Medical Branch, and author of The Future of Bioethics and Hooked : Ethics, the Medical Profession, and the Pharmaceutical Industry.
"I know of no other work that tries to draw on the extensive and emerging psychological literature on autism to examine this disorder for its philosophical and ethical implications. . . . Its conclusions challenge many leading theories of ethics' claims regarding necessary and sufficient cognitive capabilities for moral reasoning. In practical terms, it challenges assumptions about the appropriateness of some parental decision making and research in relation to autism." —
Ronald M. Green, author of Babies by Design: The Ethics of Genetic Choice
"This book will be of great interest to philosophers and students of philosophy on the issues of autism and what it means to be a person."
Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in Pictures
Autism is one of the most compelling, controversial, and heartbreaking cognitive disorders. It presents unique philosophical challenges as well, raising intriguing questions in philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and philosophy of language that need to be explored if the autistic population is to be responsibly served. Starting from the "theory of mind" thesis that a fundamental deficit in autism is the inability to recognize that other persons have minds, Deborah R. Barnbaum considers its implications for the nature of consciousness, our understanding of the consciousness of others, meaning theories in philosophy of language, and the modality of mind. This discussion lays the groundwork for consideration of the value of an autistic life, as well as the moral theories available to persons with autism. The book also explores questions about genetic decision making, research into the nature of autism, and the controversial quest for a cure. This is a timely and wide-ranging book on a disorder that commends itself to serious ethical examination.
Deborah R. Barnbaum is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Kent State University and editor (with Michael Byron) of Research Ethics: Text and Readings.
. - Paris [France] : CTNERHI - Centre Technique National d'Etudes et de Recherches sur les Handicaps et les Inadaptat, 1995 . - 262 p. ; 15,6cm x 21,6cm x 1,8cm.
