The Oxford Handbook of Autism and Co-Occurring Psychiatric Conditions / Susan W. WHITE
Titre : The Oxford Handbook of Autism and Co-Occurring Psychiatric Conditions Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Susan W. WHITE, Directeur de publication ; Carla A. MAZEFSKY, Directeur de publication ; Brenna B. MADDOX, Directeur de publication Editeur : Oxford [Angleterre] : Oxford University Press Année de publication : 2020 Collection : Oxford Library of Psychology Importance : 443 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 18,5 cm × 26,2 cm × 2,8 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-091076-1 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : AUT-B AUT-B - L'Autisme - Ouvrages généraux et scientifiques Résumé : People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often diagnosed, and treated for, co-occurring mental health disorders. Co-occurring problems are, in fact, a primary reason for referral and treatment-seeking. Research on comorbidity and its management in youth and adults with ASD has expanded at a rapid rate over the last decade. This is the first comprehensive volume on the topic of co-occurring psychiatric conditions and symptoms in ASD. In this Handbook, internationally recognized clinical scientists synthesize the research on assessment and evidence-based treatment for a broad range of conditions as they present in ASD, from childhood through adulthood. In addition to coverage of formal diagnoses that frequently present in ASD (e.g., mood and anxiety disorders), common behavioural concerns (e.g., psychosexual and sleep problems) are also addressed. Each chapter summarizes the condition or disorder as it presents in ASD, and presents the extant research on its prevalence, developmental course, etiology, and assessment and diagnosis in the context of ASD. Each chapter also includes a summary of evidence-based treatment approaches or current best practices for intervention, as well as a case example to demonstrate application. Chapters are also included to synthesize broader issues related to co-occurring psychiatric conditions in ASD, including a historical overview and conceptual framework for co-occurring conditions in ASD, crisis management, and psychopharmacology. In sum, this handbook is comprehensive compilation of the current evidence-base and recommendations for future research to inform clinical practice related to co-occurring psychiatric conditions and symptoms in ASD. Titre : The Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Toddlers: A Population Study of 2-Year-Old Swedish Children Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Gudrun NYGREN, Auteur ; Mats CEDERLUND, Auteur ; Eva SANDBERG, Auteur ; Fredrik GILLSTEDT, Auteur ; Thomas ARVIDSSON, Auteur ; Gunilla WESTMAN ANDERSSON, Auteur ; Christopher GILLBERG, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.1491-1497 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Autism spectrum disorder Prevalence Early detection Screening Diagnostic instruments Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is more common than previously believed. ASD is increasingly diagnosed at very young ages. We report estimated ASD prevalence rates from a population study of 2-year-old children conducted in 2010 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Screening for ASD had been introduced at all child health centers at child age 21/2 years. All children with suspected ASD were referred for evaluation to one center, serving the whole city of Gothenburg. The prevalence for all 2-year-olds referred in 2010 and diagnosed with ASD was 0.80%. Corresponding rates for 2-year-olds referred to the center in 2000 and 2005 (when no population screening occurred) were 0.18 and 0.04%. Results suggest that early screening contributes to a large increase in diagnosed ASD cases. Titre : The Prevalence of Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders in the Criminal Justice System Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Catherine A. CHEELY, Auteur ; Laura A. CARPENTER, Auteur ; Elizabeth J. LETOURNEAU, Auteur ; Joyce S. NICHOLAS, Auteur ; Jane CHARLES, Auteur ; Lydia B. KING, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p.1856-1862 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Autism Autism spectrum disorders Criminality Juvenile justice Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Past surveys have reported high rates of youth with disabilities in the juvenile justice system, however, little research has examined the frequency with which youth with Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are in contact with law enforcement. Using records linkage with the Department of Juvenile Justice and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the South Carolina Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Program (SC ADDM), this study compares the frequency, type, and outcome of criminal charges for youth with ASD and non-ASD youth. Youth with ASD had higher rates of crimes against persons and lower rates of crimes against property. Youth with ASD were more likely to be diverted into pre-trial interventions and less likely to be prosecuted than comparison youth. When compared to the overall SC ADDM sample, charged youth were less likely to have comorbid intellectual disability. What's the research behind it, what does it look like in practice, and what are some good examples of how to use it? Now one concise book gives professionals and parents all the basics of the widely used PRT—an empirically supported treatments for autism recognized by the National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders and the National Standards Project.
A great resource for educators, behavior specialists, early interventionists, SLPs, occupational therapists, and families, this reader-friendly pocket guide is the perfect introduction to PRT, the popular approach that uses natural learning opportunities to modify pivotal areas of behavior. •reducing disruptive behavior with PRT
•encouraging communication and social initiations
•developing a challenging curriculum that helps children make progress
•assessing children meaningfully in natural environments
•closely collaborating with parents on goals and interventions
•helping families weave interventions into everyday routines
•ensuring that children generalize skills to other settings
•decreasing parents' stress and offering positive support
Throughout the book, the Koegels engage readers with down-to-earth guidance based on best practice, true stories from their decades of experience with children and families, and clear explanations of what the research says about PRT. And the end-of-chapter questions for teachers, therapists, and parents reinforce key points and prepare them for effective PRT implementation.
