Current research with children as well as adults is described comparing early psychological development from a range of perspectives such as language, memory, thought and feelings as well as providing critical reviews of educational and intervention programmes.
New developments in the field have sparked debate that is well represented here and touches on a variety of issues ranging from musical talent to the basis of 'connectedness' to others. The readership will be drawn from many fields reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the topic and will include researchers and practitioners in psychology and psychiatry as well as educationalists, therapists, classroom teachers and parents.Permalink : https://www.cra-rhone-alpes.org/cid/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=819 Autism and blindness : Research and Reflections [Texte imprimé et/ou numérique] / Linda PRING, Directeur de publication . - Londres [Angleterre] : Whurr Publishers : Hoboken [Etats-Unis] : Wiley, 2005 . - 197 p. ; 15,3cm x 22,3cm x 1,4cm.

Format : 15,2cm x 22,8cm x 2,5cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-252-07989-4 Note générale : Bibliogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : AUT-B AUT-B - L'Autisme - Ouvrages généraux et scientifiques Résumé : The reasons behind the increase in autism diagnoses have become hotly contested in the media as well as within the medical, scholarly, and autistic communities. In Autism and Gender: From Refrigerator Mothers to Computer Geeks, Jordynn Jack focuses on the ways gender influences popular discussion and understanding of autism's causes and effects. She identifies gendered theories like the “refrigerator mother” theory, for example, which blames emotionally distant mothers for autism, and the “extreme male brain” theory, which links autism to the modes of systematic thinking found in male computer geeks.
Jack's analysis reveals how people employ highly gendered theories to craft rhetorical narratives around stock characters--fix-it dads, heroic mother warriors rescuing children from autism--that advocate for ends beyond the story itself while also allowing the storyteller to gain authority, understand the disorder, and take part in debates.
The first book to look at how gender informs popular discussion about autism, Autism and Gender also offers new insights into the ways rhetorical inquiry can and does contribute to conversations about gender and disability. A great deal of clinical and medical research has been devoted to autism, but the traditional humanities disciplines and the new field of Disability Studies have yet to explore it. This volume, the first scholarly book on autism in the humanities, brings scholars from several disciplines together with adults on the autism spectrum to investigate the diverse ways that autism has been represented in novels, poems, autobiographies, films, and clinical discourses, and to explore the connections and demarcations between autistic and "neurotypical" creativity.Using an empathetic scholarship that unites professional rigor with experiential knowledge derived from the contributors' lives with or as autistic people, the essays address such questions as: In what novel forms does autistic creativity appear, and what unusual strengths does it possess? How do autistic representations - whether by or about autistic people - revise conventional ideas of cognition, creativity, language, (dis)ability and sociability? This timely and important collection breaks new ground in literary and film criticism, aesthetics, psychology, and Disability Studies. The toolkit is divided in to the following sections listed below. Please choose a section for specific information and tools that can be found in the toolkit. Some sample tools are provided on this page.
Introduction
This section contains the 2 ASD clinical reports and developmental screening policy statement. It also contains other AAP ASD publications and helpful Web sites.
Identification
This section contains freestanding algorithms for ASD and general developmental screening that can serve as quick references for the clinician. It also includes surveillance and screening tools that are sensitive to ASD for 3 different age groups. No tool is perfect and inclusion of these tools does not imply AAP endorsement; they were chosen because of their easy accessibility and reliability based on current available research.
Referrals
This section provides sample referral forms and letters that can assist the clinician in gaining access to insurance payment for early intervention, educational, and therapeutic services for patients with ASDs.
Physician Fact Sheets
This section provides the clinician with additional informational fact sheets that complement and further explain selected topics addressed in the 2 ASD clinical reports: seizures, sleep, nutrition, gastrointestinal disorders, behavior, education, complementary and alternative medicine, and more. It also contains a form that can be inserted into the child?s clinical record as an age-specific flowchart to guide the clinician through the maze of tests and interventions appropriate for the diagnosis and management of children with ASDs.
Family Handouts
This section contains the greatest number of tools and is especially formatted to help the clinician provide focused information to families when they identify a specific concern or need that emerges throughout the life span. Handouts address early intervention, school interventions, behavioral techniques, vaccines, strategies to prepare children for medical appointments, a form for local emergency medical services, coexisting health conditions, and more (these serve as companions to the Physician Fact Sheets). Conversations with parents differ from clinical interviews because parents are encouraged to tell stories about their child and to describe positive qualities in addition to developmental challenges.
Conversations with children differ from traditional evaluation sessions because the evaluators encourage children to explore their areas of interest and to share their way of relating to the world.
Conversations among multi-disciplinary team members consist of discussing a child’s behavioral profile using a common framework and descriptive language.
Written conversations are evaluation reports that provide accessible and descriptive language about the child that links to the child’s behavioral profile with practical educational interventions. Autism: Current Theories and Evidence presents current theories about autism and the evidence that supports them. The goal is to show how the scientific method is revealing the biological bases of this spectrum of disorders, thereby leading the way to their treatment and prevention using evidence-based medicine. This book has 20 chapters divided into 6 sections: Molecular and Clinical Genetics; Neurotransmitters and Cell Signaling; Endocrinology, Growth and Metabolism; Immunology, Maternal-Fetal Effects and Neuroinflammation; Neuroanatomy, Imaging and Neural networks; and Environmental Mechanisms and Models. The subjects cover a wide range of current scientific work in the field of autism, with strong and growing evidence to support them, and demonstrate both the breadth and depth of current autism research. The reader is encouraged to consider how theories and the scientific method, in the hands of these and other dedicated researchers, are leading to greater knowledge and continued progress in autism research. The book proposed that the key problems were an inability to recognize and think about thoughts (theory of mind), and an inability to integrate pieces of information into coherent wholes (central coherence). It suggested that from this beginning, problems of communication, social interaction, and flexibility follow as the complex interactions of human development unfold.
This updated edition reports on how this explanation has stood the test of time. A new chapter outlines developments in neuropsychological research that have taken place since the book was first published and reviews the growing body of work on the neurological basis of autism. Format : 15,5cm x 23cm x 1,2cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-138-10612-3 Note générale : Bibliogr.; Index Langues : Français (fre) Mots-clés : cerveau Bayésien Index. décimale : AUT-B AUT-B - L'Autisme - Ouvrages généraux et scientifiques Résumé : Based on Francesca Happé’s best-selling textbook, Autism: An Introduction to Psychological Theory, this completely new edition provides a concise overview of contemporary psychological theories about autism. Fletcher-Watson and Happé explore the relationship between theories of autism at psychological (cognitive), biological and behavioural levels, and consider their clinical and educational impact.
The authors summarise what is known about the biology and behavioural features of autism, and provide concise but comprehensive accounts of all influential psychological models including ‘Theory of Mind’ (ToM) models, early social development models and alternative information processing models such as ‘weak central coherence’ theory. The book also discusses more recent attempts to understand autism, including the ‘Double Empathy Problem’ and Bayesian theories. In each case, the authors describe the theory, review the evidence and provide critical analysis of its value and impact. Recognising the multiplicity of theoretical views, and rapidly changing nature of autism research, each chapter considers current debates and major questions that remain for the future.
Importantly, the book includes the voices of autistic people, including parents and practitioners, who were asked to provide commentaries on each chapter, helping to contextualise theory and research evidence with accounts of real-life experience. The book embraces neurodiversity whilst recognising the real needs of autistic people and their families. Thus Autism: A New Introduction to Psychological Theory and Current Debate provides the reader with a critical overview of psychological theory but also embeds this within community perspectives, making it a relevant and progressive contribution to understanding autism, and essential reading for students and practitioners across educational, clinical and social settings. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : AUT-G AUT-G - L'Autisme - Approches controversées Résumé : A London researcher was the first to assert that the combination measles-mumps-rubella vaccine known as MMR caused autism in children. Following this "discovery," a handful of parents declared that a mercury-containing preservative in several vaccines was responsible for the disease. If mercury caused autism, they reasoned, eliminating it from a child's system should treat the disorder. Consequently, a number of untested alternative therapies arose, and, most tragically, in one such treatment, a doctor injected a five-year-old autistic boy with a chemical in an effort to cleanse him of mercury, which stopped his heart instead.
Children with autism have been placed on stringent diets, subjected to high-temperature saunas, bathed in magnetic clay, asked to swallow digestive enzymes and activated charcoal, and injected with various combinations of vitamins, minerals, and acids. Instead of helping, these therapies can hurt those who are most vulnerable, and particularly in the case of autism, they undermine childhood vaccination programs that have saved millions of lives. An overwhelming body of scientific evidence clearly shows that childhood vaccines are safe and does not cause autism. Yet widespread fear of vaccines on the part of parents persists.
In this book, Paul A. Offit, a national expert on vaccines, challenges the modern-day false prophets who have so egregiously misled the public and exposes the opportunism of the lawyers, journalists, celebrities, and politicians who support them. Offit recounts the history of autism research and the exploitation of this tragic condition by advocates and zealots. He considers the manipulation of science in the popular media and the courtroom, and he explores why society is susceptible to the bad science and risky therapies put forward by many antivaccination activists.
