One area not studied in detail is whether females and males with autism perform differently in tests of cognitive ability. The results of previous research are quite mixed. One explanation may be that some research comparing females and males with autism did not include a neurotypical control group for comparison. As a result, it is not clear whether the sex differences in cognitive ability observed in people with autism are similar to differences between neurotypical males and females. To better understand whether there are unique differences between males and females with autism, it is important to also compare them with neurotypical males and females. In our research, we included a neurotypical group and compared males and females with and without a diagnosis of autism. We found that the sex differences in autism are similar to what we observe in males and females without autism. Our study showed that compared with males, females (with and without autism) do better in assessments of processing speed, cognitive flexibility, verbal learning and memory and semantic fluency. Our results suggest that although females show different cognitive performance to males, these sex differences were not specific to the group with a diagnosis of autism. Our goal was to examine the association between childhood performance on neuropsychological testing and persistence of OCD into adulthood.
Methods: Twenty-four children with OCD were followed for an average of 7.5 years into early adulthood. Neuropsychological performance in childhood (<16 years) was measured. The battery included the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III), the Purdue pegboard test, the Rey–Osterreith Complex Figure Task (RCFT) and the Beery–Buktenica test of Visual Motor Integration (VMI). We hypothesized that deficits in fine-motor skills, visuospatial skills, and nonverbal memory as well as overall intelligence would be associated with adulthood outcome. We used a Cox proportional hazard model of survival analysis in which time to remission of OCD symptoms was the main outcome variable.
Results: Poor childhood performance on the Purdue pegboard task and the block design subscale of WISC-III was associated with persistence of OCD symptoms into adulthood. IQ, VMI, and nonverbal memory performance did not predict significantly the persistence of OCD.
Conclusions: These results suggest that visuospatial and fine-motor skill deficits are predictive of poor long-term outcome in pediatric-onset OCD. Participants comprised 44 right-handed high-functioning children with autism (36 males, 8 females) and 80 typically developing control children (58 males, 22 females) matched on age, sex and performance IQ. We examined lateralization of functional motor circuit connectivity based on homotopic seeds derived from peak activations during a finger tapping paradigm. Motor performance was assessed using the Physical and Neurological Examination for Subtle Signs (PANESS). RESULTS: Children with ASC showed rightward lateralization in mean motor circuit connectivity compared to typically developing children, and this was associated with poorer performance on all three PANESS measures. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings reveal that atypical lateralization in ASC is not restricted to language functions but is also present in circuits subserving motor functions and may underlie motor deficits in children with ASC. Future studies should investigate whether this is an age-invariant finding extending to adolescents and adults and whether these asymmetries relate to atypical lateralization in the language domain. Nonetheless, as the MoCA-NL is more sensitive to cognitive impairment, it is the recommended screener for older autistic adults.
