I Want to be Like You / Travis E. BREEDING
Titre : I Want to be Like You : Life with Asperger's Syndrome Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Travis E. BREEDING, Auteur Editeur : Mustang OK [Etats-Unis] : Tate Publishing Année de publication : 2010 Importance : 295 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-61663-918-1 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : ASP-L ASP-L - Asperger - Témoignages Résumé : Something makes Travis Breeding different than everyone else. But it isn't what most people he's met think it is.
Travis Breeding has never been like others. Growing up, he noticed some of the differences—he had a bed-wetting issue; he had difficulty with fine motor skills; he became obsessed with his special interest, trombone; and most troubling for him, he had trouble making friends. He just couldn't seem to fit in with anyone and didn't understand how socializing worked. He couldn't understand why people didn't like him. Why did everyone think he was so weird or creepy or psycho? Was he?
Travis hit a low point in his college days and began making suicide attempts. When he finally learned he has Asperger's, it wasn't quite the solution he longed for. He didn't want to accept it. But once he embraced it, he realized he could begin making changes that could someday lead to living the life he wants—one that includes a family and good friends. And even more, he could help others just like him.
Now Travis is on a mission to help us all understand what Asperger's is and how we can help those around us who seem a little, or a lot, different. With a combination of personal experiences, information about Asperger's and the autism spectrum, and Travis's observations and advice, I Want to be Like You proves to be a perfect tool to help readers who are on the spectrum, are helping someone on the spectrum, or just want to understand what this relatively new diagnosis is to bridge the gap between autistic and neurotypical individuals. Titre : Identification of Four Novel Synonymous Substitutions in the X-Linked Genes Neuroligin 3 and Neuroligin 4X in Japanese Patients with Autistic Spectrum Disorder Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Kumiko YANAGI, Auteur ; Tadashi KANAME, Auteur ; Keiko WAKUI, Auteur ; Ohiko HASHIMOTO, Auteur ; Yoshimitsu FUKUSHIMA, Auteur ; Kenji NARITOMI, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : 5 p. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : PER Périodiques Résumé : Mutations in the X-linked genes neuroligin 3 (NLGN3) and neuroligin 4X (NLGN4X) were first implicated in the pathogenesis of X-linked autism in Swedish families. However, reports of mutations in these genes in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) patients from various ethnic backgrounds present conflicting results regarding the etiology of ASD, possibly because of genetic heterogeneity and/or differences in their ethnic background. Additional mutation screening study on another ethnic background could help to clarify the relevance of the genes to ASD. We scanned the entire coding regions of NLGN3 and NLGN4X in 62 Japanese patients with ASD by polymerase chain reaction-high-resolution melting curve and direct sequencing analyses. Four synonymous substitutions, one in NLGN3 and three in NLGN4X, were identified in four of the 62 patients. These substitutions were not present in 278 control X-chromosomes from unrelated Japanese individuals and were not registered in the database of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms build 132 or in the Japanese Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms database, indicating that they were novel and specific to ASD. Though further analysis is necessary to determine the physiological and clinical importance of such substitutions, the possibility of the relevance of both synonymous and nonsynonymous substitutions with the etiology of ASD should be considered. Titre : Identifying, assessing, and treating autism at school Type de document : Texte imprimé et/ou numérique Auteurs : Stephen E. BROCK, Auteur ; Shane R. JIMERSON, Auteur ; David J. HANSEN, Auteur Editeur : Berlin [Allemagne] : Springer Année de publication : 2006 Importance : 124 p. Présentation : ill. Format : 16cm x 24,2cm x 1cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-387-29601-2 Note générale : Bibiogr., Index Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : EDU-D EDU-D - Education - Psychoéducation Résumé : As the rate of autism diagnosis continues to escalate, awareness and recognition of this developmental brain disorder – as well as a demand for services – are also mushrooming. School districts, already struggling under the weight of withering budgets and increasing enrollments, are now scrambling to strike a balance between the types of services and treatments parents want for their children and what the school system can afford to provide. Consequently, a broad cross-section of professionals and parents are searching for the means and methods by which to identify and address the wide-ranging educational needs of the children with autism spectrum disorder.
Identifying, Assessing, and Treating Autism at School provides a one-stop resource that enables school psychologists to coordinate efforts between students and parents as well as other educators, administrators, and social services providers to determine which interventions are likely to be most effective in meeting the unique needs of children with autism. This volume, designed as a practical, easy-to-use reference for school psychologists and other educational professionals:
•Makes the case for why school psychologists and their colleagues need to be more prepared, willing, and able to identify and serve students with autism.
•Identifies the causes, prevalence, and associated conditions of autism spectrum disorders.
•Provides a review of screening, referral, and diagnostic assessment processes.
•Offers much-needed guidance on conducting psychoeducational assessments.
•Reviews appropriate treatments for students with autism.
School psychologists, general and special educators, counselors, and social workers will find Identifying, Assessing, and Treating Autism at School an invaluable resource.
